A call for literary-themed submissions from Sanguine Gryphon combined with the idea of Mrs Whatsit (an angel disguised as a tramp in Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time) to inspire this shawl. Mrs Whatsit doesn’t use difficult stitches, but it does require a fair amount of focus and an ability to read your knitting. First published in 2011, the charts have been thoroughly reworked and the pattern shifted to use worsted weight yarn.

Mrs Whatsit Shawl by Kourtney Robinson

Project Overview

Mrs Whatsit is an intermediate-level knitted shawl inspired by Madeleine L'Engle's literary character from A Wrinkle In Time. Designer Kourtney Robinson created this pattern as part of a Dollybird Workshop collection featuring literary-themed submissions. The shawl captures the whimsical spirit of Mrs Whatsit—an angel disguised as a tramp—through its design aesthetic that evokes both earthiness and ethereal beauty.

Design Inspiration and Concept

The Mrs Whatsit shawl draws directly from L'Engle's vivid description of the character: bundled in assorted colored scarves, a shocking pink stole, and rough layers. More poetically, the design channels Mrs Whatsit's magical nature, referencing her wings "made of rainbows, of light upon water, of poetry." This literary foundation informs the shawl's visual and tactile qualities, creating a piece that balances whimsy with wearability.

Finished Dimensions

The completed shawl measures 80cm (32 inches) in length, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Knitting Techniques and Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, Mrs Whatsit does not employ difficult or complex stitches. However, the pattern requires sustained focus and the ability to read your knitting—meaning knitters should be comfortable identifying stitches in progress and troubleshooting their work. This makes it an excellent project for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to develop their pattern-reading skills without being overwhelmed by advanced stitch work.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn: Verdant Gryphon's "Mondegreen" in the colorway Age of Asparagus; composition is 60% Blue Faced Leicester wool, 20% baby camel, and 20% silk
  • Yardage: 182 meters (200 yards) per 112-gram (4-ounce) skein; 3 skeins required for the finished shawl
  • Needles: 4.5mm (US size #7) circular needle, 80cm (32 inches) in length

Yarn Characteristics

The blend of Blue Faced Leicester wool, baby camel, and silk creates a luxurious fiber combination. The wool provides elasticity and warmth, baby camel adds softness and breathability, and silk contributes subtle sheen and drape. This composition makes the finished shawl both comfortable for extended wear and visually interesting as light plays across the fabric.

Pattern Format

Mrs Whatsit is available as a downloadable PDF pattern (Version 2.7, November 19, 2014), allowing immediate access for digital knitting reference.
