Mosey: Men's Sweater by Melissa Leapman

What is Being Made

Mosey is a men's knitted sweater designed by Melissa Leapman. This advanced-level garment is constructed in pieces from the bottom up and then sewn together. The sweater is available in five sizes with finished chest measurements ranging from 40 inches (101.5 cm) to 56 inches (142 cm), and a finished length of 25 inches (63.5 cm). The garment is intended to be worn with 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) of ease for comfortable fit.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This sweater employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for advanced crafters. The garment is worked in separate pieces from the bottom up, requiring careful piece-by-piece construction before final assembly. The pattern features panel-based shaping, with Panel B playing a significant structural role throughout the design. The stitch count in Panel B changes at various points during the pattern, with base stitch counts of 49 stitches in Panel B used as reference during shaping instructions. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through strategic bind-offs worked at each shoulder edge multiple times to create proper garment structure and fit.

Stitches Used

  • 1x1 Rib: A classic ribbed stitch worked over an even number of stitches, alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, p1) to create elasticity and structure, typically used for cuffs and edges
  • Seed Stitch: A textured stitch pattern worked over an odd number of stitches that creates a bumpy, fabric-like appearance through alternating knit and purl stitches

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Mosey is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn. The suggested yarn is Jo Sharp Silkroad DK Tweed, which offers a luxurious fiber blend of 85% wool, 10% silk, and 5% cashmere. Each ball contains 147 yards (134 meters) and weighs 1¾ ounces (50 grams). The complete sweater requires 12 to 16 balls depending on size, with the smallest size needing 12 balls and the largest size requiring 16 balls. The suggested colorway is #402 Serpentine. Standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required to complete this project.
