Product Description

This easy to follow pattern (17 pages) is written for two sizes (pot holder and mandala). It contains step by step full written instructions in English using standard crochet abbreviations and US terms (stitch guide is given in the pattern). It also contains lots of pictures explaining all the tricky and difficult places.

This mandala can be used in many ways. It can serve as a potholder and when not used in the kitchen it can be hanged on a wall. But it can also be a nice decoration for your old (or new) pillow cover. Though consisting only of one layer it is quite thick due to huge amount of front post stitches.

** Yarn in four colors. I used yarn Scheepjes Chunky Monkey:

Yarn A: 1820 Mist x1 ball Yarn B: 1064 Beige x2 balls Yarn C: 1001 White x2 balls Yarn D: 1054 Tawny x1 ball

** Crochet hook 5.5 mm (I) or the size that will give an acceptable gauge.

** Scissors and Tapestry needle to weave the ends.

Mint Coffee Mandala Pot Holder by LillaBjörnCrochet

Project Overview

The Mint Coffee Mandala is an original crochet design by Tatsiana Kupryianchyk of LillaBjörnCrochet, created as a decorative pot holder suitable for table settings and home décor. This intermediate-level crochet project features an overlay crochet technique that produces an intricate mandala-inspired pattern, making it both functional and visually striking for kitchen use.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pot holder with a mandala design, combining practical functionality with decorative appeal. The finished piece is ideal for protecting tables and surfaces from hot cookware while serving as an attractive accent to any kitchen or dining area. The overlay crochet technique creates dimensional patterning that gives the pot holder visual interest and texture.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Mint Coffee Mandala employs overlay crochet as its primary technique. This advanced method involves layering stitches to create dimensional patterns and designs that appear to float above the base fabric. The technique requires working through both back loops (BL) and front loops (FL) of stitches to build the multi-layered mandala effect. Increases are strategically placed throughout the pattern to shape the circular mandala design and ensure proper fabric geometry.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern utilizes standard US crochet terminology. Key stitches and abbreviations include:

  • ch – chain stitch, the foundation stitch for beginning rows and creating openwork sections
  • BL – back loop only, used to create texture and definition in the overlay layers
  • FL – front loop only, worked to build contrasting pattern elements
  • inc – increase stitches, essential for shaping the circular mandala form

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Mint Coffee Mandala pattern calls for Scheepjes Chunky Monkey yarn, a premium acrylic option that provides durability and easy care for a frequently-used pot holder. This yarn is 100% acrylic, weighing 100 grams per ball with 116 meters (127 yards) of yardage per ball.

The yarn weight is classified as Aran (8 wpi), which is a chunky weight ideal for creating quick, dense fabric with excellent stitch definition. The pattern requires four coordinating colors from the Scheepjes Chunky Monkey range:

  • Yarn A: 1820 Mist – 1 ball (soft mint green base color)
  • Yarn B: 1064 Beige – 2 balls (warm neutral overlay color)
  • Yarn C: 1001 White – 2 balls (bright contrast for pattern definition)
  • Yarn D: 1054 Tawny – 1 ball (warm accent color)

Tools and Equipment

To complete this project, you will need a 5.5 mm (size I) crochet hook, or a hook size that achieves the pattern's specified gauge. Additional tools include scissors for cutting yarn and a tapestry needle for weaving in all ends, which is essential for a polished finished product.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. The overlay crochet method requires understanding of how to work through specific loops and manage multiple yarn colors, but the detailed pattern guidance supports successful completion by experienced beginners and intermediate crafters.
