Product Description
Milo the lion is sporting a rather fetching mane, and chatting with their chums Oscar the tiger and Jacob the giraffe. These little toys are quick to knit, great for using up odds and ends of yarn balls to reduce waste, and are an ideal size for little hands to play with. The toys photographed were all knitted from the same pattern, but used different yarns. The lion’s mane is made from yarn that is attached onto the head after making up. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, these toys are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). The tails are i-cord tubes worked on two DPNs. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, knitting stripes, and seaming to finish.
Milo the Lion and Friends Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern by Amanda Berry features three adorable stuffed animal toys: Milo the Lion, a Tiger, and a Giraffe. These intermediate-level knitted toys are perfect for creating a charming trio of animal companions. Each toy is knitted from the same versatile pattern, allowing crafters to create all three designs or focus on their favorite animal friend.
Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. Key techniques include basic knit and purl stitches to construct the three-dimensional toy bodies. A distinctive feature of Milo the Lion involves knotting yarn lengths onto the head after assembly to create the lion's characteristic mane, adding texture and dimension to the finished toy. This post-knitting embellishment technique allows for customization of the mane appearance and texture.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the construction relies on standard knitting stitches appropriate for toy making. The pattern is designed to be worked on 3.25mm (US 3) single pointed needles, which is the appropriate needle size for DK weight yarn and creates a fabric dense enough for stuffed toys.
Materials and Yarn
The toys are knitted using acrylic DK yarns (also known as light worsted weight or 8ply). Crafters will need approximately 30g each in four coordinating shades: Orange, Yellow, White, and Brown. The pattern recommends Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn, as a reliable substitute option.
For Milo the Lion's mane, the pattern calls for an eyelash yarn in DK weight, such as a fluffy Orange polyester eyelash yarn or suitable alternatives like King Cole Moments. Only 25g of eyelash yarn is needed for the mane embellishment. Crafters also have the flexibility to substitute the eyelash yarn with alternative materials if preferred.
Additional Notions
- A pair of 3.25mm (US 3) single pointed needles
- Stuffing for the finished toys
- Yarn for knotting the lion's mane onto the completed head
This pattern is ideal for intermediate knitters looking to create charming, huggable toys with personality and charm.
