Mill Star Cushion Cover by Arella Seaton Design
Project Overview
The Mill Star is a knitted cushion cover front featuring an original graphic mosaic pattern designed by Arella Seaton. This beginner-friendly knitting project creates a striking visual effect through the strategic use of color reversal in a mosaic garter stitch construction. The finished cover is sewn onto a premade cushion cover base, making it an accessible project for knitters new to colorwork techniques.
What Is Being Made
This pattern provides instructions for knitting the front panel of a cushion cover only. The design is available in two finished sizes: a small 35 x 35 cm (14 x 14 inches) and a large 45 x 45 cm (18 x 18 inches) version. The knitted front is then attached to a plain premade cushion cover using basic sewing techniques. Knitters can also adjust the finished size by working with different needle sizes, allowing for customization beyond the two provided dimensions.
Pattern Design and Visual Effect
The Mill Star features an original graphic mosaic pattern that creates a distinctive visual impact. The design achieves its striking appearance through the reversal of the main color and contrasting colors within the mosaic stitch structure, producing a dynamic interplay between the color blocks. This color-switching technique adds depth and complexity to what is fundamentally a straightforward stitch construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The cushion cover is constructed using mosaic garter stitch, a colorwork technique that allows knitters to work with multiple colors while maintaining the simplicity of garter stitch. The pattern is worked in blocks, which helps organize the color changes and makes the project manageable for beginners. Mosaic knitting is an excellent introduction to colorwork because it eliminates the complexity of stranded or intarsia techniques while still producing a multi-colored graphic design.
The garter stitch base provides a textured, reversible fabric that looks equally attractive on both sides, making it ideal for a cushion cover that may be viewed from different angles. The mosaic technique involves slipping stitches to create the color pattern, which is less intimidating than managing multiple working yarns simultaneously.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern uses worsted weight yarn (also called 10 ply), which is a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating substantial, durable cushion covers. The sample large-size cover was created using Malabrigo Yarn Rios in three colors:
- MC (Main Color): Malabrigo Rios #704 Ivory, 100 g / 3.53 oz / 192 m / 210 yards
- CC1 (Contrasting Color 1): Malabrigo Rios #696 Whole Grain, 80 g / 2.82 oz
- CC2 (Contrasting Color 2): Malabrigo Rios #429 Cape Cod Gray, 35 g / 1.24 oz
The pattern notes that Drops Lima or similar worsted-weight yarns can be substituted for the Malabrigo Rios. The yardage requirements will vary depending on which size version is being knitted and whether needle size adjustments are made.
Tools and Notions Required
Beyond yarn, knitters will need standard knitting supplies and finishing materials:
- Appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn (size determined by desired finished dimensions)
- A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
- A sewing needle and thread for attaching the knitted front to the premade cushion cover
- A plain premade cushion cover in the corresponding size (35 x 35 cm or 45 x 45 cm)
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are ready to explore colorwork but want to avoid the complexity of stranded knitting or intarsia techniques. The mosaic garter stitch method simplifies color changes while still producing a sophisticated, graphic result. Beginners will gain confidence working with multiple colors while maintaining the fundamental simplicity of garter stitch.
