Product Description

This is a slightly boxy, comfortable pullover to live in or mess about in.

The placement of the pockets magically creates a waist line even as the sweater is knitted straight without shaping

Messing about in Boats is knitted like all ZIggurats: in one piece, top-down, shoulders and sleeve caps knitted in one sweep, and then all in the round including the built-in pockets to just before the hem, where a bumforgiving split requires a bit of back and forth knitting.

A simple rib collar is knitted on last. Not a seam in sight. Honest.

Skeins (Vivacious DK) required: 5 (5, 5, 5, 6) [6, 6, 6, 7, 7]

Approximate yardage: 950 (1000, 1100, 1150, 1200) [1300, 1350, 1400, 1450, 1500] m 1050 (1100, 1200, 1250, 1350) [1400, 1450, 1550, 1600, 1650] yds

Messing About in Boats: Top-Down Boxy Pullover by Åsa Tricosa

What Is Being Made

Messing About is a comfortable, boxy pullover sweater designed as a relaxed everyday garment. The design features a contemporary silhouette with a generous, lived-in fit and includes practical built-in pockets. A simple rib collar finishes the neckline, and the sweater incorporates a bum-forgiving slit at the hem that adds both style and comfort to the design.

Construction Method and Knitting Technique

This pullover is knitted using the Ziggurat construction method, which means the entire sweater is worked in a single piece from the top down. The shoulders and sleeve caps are knitted in one continuous sweep, eliminating the need for seaming. After the initial top-down construction, the body is worked entirely in the round, including the built-in pockets, continuing until just before the hem. The hem features a back-and-forth knitted section to accommodate the bum-forgiving slit, and a simple rib collar is added as the final finishing detail. This seamless construction method creates a garment with no seams whatsoever.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level knitter. The primary construction uses stockinette stitch in the round for the body and sleeves. Ribbing is used for the collar finish and likely for cuff details. The pattern incorporates techniques for working in the round, managing increases for sleeve caps and shoulders, and executing the transition from circular knitting to flat knitting for the hem slit.

Yarn and Materials

Primary Yarn: Fyberspates Vivacious DK (8-ply weight, 100% merino wool, 206 meters / 225 yards per 115-gram skein) in the colorway Deep Acqua. Yardage requirements range from 950 meters (1050 yards) for the smallest size (81 cm / 32 in) to 1500 meters (1650 yards) for the largest size (127 cm / 50 in), requiring between 5 and 7 skeins depending on the finished size.

Alternative Yarn Options: The pattern accommodates several DK-weight merino alternatives, including Madelinetosh Merino DK, Wollmeise Merino DK, Drops Karisma, and The Yarn Yard Marchmont DK. Any DK-weight yarn with similar yardage and fiber content will produce comparable results.

Needles and Notions: The pattern requires a 4 mm (US 6) circular needle in a length of 80–100 cm (32–40 inches) for working the body in the round. Additional notions are referenced but not fully detailed in the provided content.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern is available in ten sizes, ranging from 81 cm (32 inches) to 127 cm (50 inches) in finished bust circumference, accommodating a wide range of body measurements. The boxy, comfortable fit is intentional, making this sweater suitable for relaxed everyday wear across multiple size ranges.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, increasing and decreasing, and seamless construction techniques.
