Product Description
Knitted friends are the best friends, and Melly the Elephant gives unbeatable cuddles. Knitted in garter stitch, Melly also has a bright patchwork blanket saddle. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the elephant is knitted in garter stitch in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). A crochet hook is used to add the elephant’s tail and a blue crochet border to the blanket. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knit, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Melly the Elephant Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
Melly the Elephant is a charming stuffed toy elephant designed by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a soft, huggable plush companion perfect for children or as a decorative piece. The pattern includes instructions for knitting the main elephant body along with a coordinating blanket, making it a complete toy project.
Craft and Techniques
This project combines knitting and crochet techniques to create a finished toy. The primary construction method is knitting, which forms the body and structural components of the elephant. A 3.5mm crochet hook is also used as part of the assembly process. The finished pieces are then seamed together using a tapestry needle, and the toy is stuffed with polyester fiberfill to create a three-dimensional plush form. This multi-technique approach allows crafters to develop skills in both knitting and finishing methods essential for toy making.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While the pattern abbreviations section is referenced in the document, the specific stitches used are standard knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern employs stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping throughout the knitting process. Seaming with a darning or tapestry needle joins the various knitted pieces together, and stuffing creates the dimensional toy form before final closure.
Yarn and Materials
Melly the Elephant is constructed using 100% acrylic DK yarn (also known as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply). The pattern requires less than 100g of yarn in each color shade, making it an economical project. Recommended yarn includes Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK or similar acrylic DK alternatives.
The elephant is created in multiple colors:
- Grey for the main elephant body
- White, Yellow, Red, Green, and Blue for the coordinating blanket and embellishments
Additional materials required include:
- 3.5mm (US 4) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm for the main knitting
- 3.5mm (US E/4) crochet hook for finishing details
- 200g bag of toy filling for stuffing the completed pieces
- Two 10mm domed black buttons for eyes
- Darning or tapestry needle for seaming pieces together
- Stitch marker for tracking pattern rows
- Pins and ruler or tape measure for assembly and finishing
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting techniques and are ready to tackle toy construction with shaping, color work, and finishing methods.
