Product Description
Living in a part of the world where winter often seems endless, I am always so relieved to discover that it does, in fact, eventually come to an end. It’s incredibly reassuring when the snow melts, the birds return, the sunshine feels warmer, and the grass and leaves start to grow again. Socks are always welcome in spring, particularly in colours reminiscent of the bloom returning to the world outside your front door. What better way to celebrate than with a bright pair of leafy-green, cabled vine socks?
This pattern is worked for 2 sizes, and uses a chart. Shaded sections of the chart are NOT worked, for the smaller size. Full chart is used for the larger size.

Marching On Sock Pattern by Glenna C.
What Is Being Made
Marching On is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by Glenna C. for Tanis Fiber Arts. This pattern creates a pair of socks available in two sizes: Small (to fit 6.5–8.0 inches leg/foot circumference) and Large (to fit 8.25–10 inches leg/foot circumference). The socks feature cable twist details and are worked from the top down using chart-based instructions, making them an engaging project for knitters seeking to expand their sock-knitting skills beyond basic stockinette designs.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Marching On pattern incorporates several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and textural depth to the finished socks:
- Chart Reading: Knitters follow charted instructions to execute the pattern, requiring familiarity with reading knitting charts and translating symbols into stitches.
- Knit and Purl Stitches: The foundation stitches used throughout the pattern to create the base fabric and textural contrast.
- Cable Twists: The defining stitch element of this pattern. Cable twists are worked without a cable needle (though a cable needle is optional), allowing knitters to practice this technique efficiently by crossing stitches directly on the working needles.
- Decreases: Strategic decreases are incorporated into the pattern, likely used during the heel and toe shaping to achieve proper sock fit and structure.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Tanis Fiber Arts Purple Label Cashmere Sock yarn, a premium blend composed of 70% merino wool, 20% cashmere, and 10% nylon. One 4 oz (100g) skein provides 375 yards (342 meters) of yardage, which is sufficient to complete the socks in either size. The cashmere and merino combination offers softness and warmth, while the nylon content provides durability and elasticity essential for sock longevity. The pattern is shown worked in the 'Clover' colorway, though the design accommodates any color choice within the specified yarn.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern is worked on 2.5mm (US #1.5) needles, or whatever needle size is required to achieve the specified gauge. The required gauge is 32 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches on 2.5mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for sock fit, particularly in the leg and foot circumference. A cable needle is listed as optional, since the pattern teaches cable twists worked directly on the needles without this additional tool.
Pattern Context and Design Philosophy
According to the pattern notes, the designer emphasizes the special place socks hold in a knitter's wardrobe. While many knitters focus on larger projects like sweaters, mittens, and gloves, socks offer a unique satisfaction—particularly during seasonal transitions. The Marching On pattern celebrates this sentiment, offering a cable-detailed sock design that feels fresh and welcoming whether worn during winter's chill or spring's returning warmth. The pattern's intermediate difficulty level and chart-based construction make it suitable for knitters ready to move beyond basic sock patterns while still enjoying the meditative, portable nature of sock knitting.
