Product Description
This mandala top was a request from my customer, that wanted a mandala in the bakc with a a hood. It is so fun to make a hooded top, the hood itself is very easy. I think this top is great on its own or over a long-sleeved shirt <3

Mandala Top with Cape Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
This is a Mandala top with cape, designed by Izabela Firlová. The garment features a striking mandala motif that forms the foundation of the design, which is then expanded sideways to create a fitted top, with an additional hood or cape element added to complete the piece. The pattern is sized for S/M with a finished width of approximately 90–95 cm (35.5–37.5 inches), though the final width may vary depending on the number of rows worked in the front section.
Crochet Techniques Used
This advanced-level crochet pattern employs several key techniques to achieve its intricate mandala design and structured silhouette. The construction begins with a circular mandala motif worked from the center outward, created by chaining and slip stitching to form a ring, then building layers of stitches into that ring. The pattern then transitions to sideways construction, where the crocheter works horizontally to expand the mandala into the body of the top. The cape or hood is added as a separate element after the main top is complete. The pattern uses stitch repetition and cluster stitches (specifically treble crochet clusters) to create decorative texture and shaping throughout the garment.
Stitches Used
The Mandala top with cape incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create the initial ring and spacing between stitch groups
- Slip stitch (ss) – used to join rounds and secure stitches without adding height
- Single crochet (sc) – a short, tight stitch used for shaping and texture
- Double crochet (dc) – a medium-height stitch used extensively throughout the mandala and front rows
- Treble crochet (tr) – a taller stitch created by wrapping yarn once around the hook before inserting
- Double treble crochet (dtr) – an even taller stitch created by wrapping yarn twice around the hook
- Treble crochet cluster (trtr5tog) – a decorative element where five treble stitches are worked together, creating a textured, dimensional effect
Materials and Tools
The pattern requires sport weight yarn in either silk or cotton for a soft, draping finish. For size S, approximately 660 meters of yarn is needed. The recommended hook size is 3.5 mm. The gauge is 4 inches (10 cm) measuring 17 stitches by 9 rows, which helps ensure the finished garment achieves the intended dimensions and drape. Working with sport weight yarn on a 3.5 mm hook creates a fabric with good structure while maintaining the delicate appearance of the mandala pattern.
