Product Description
The Unicorn is the national animal for Scotland. I'm Scottish, it gets cold there, so a unicorn scarf seemed to be a logical pattern to create. She is called Luna because that's what my niece has called her (she holds naming rights on everything I create!).
This is worked in double knitting to create 2 layers for warmth. It is important to follow the pattern as written as you will be contructing as you go along. I knitted it in acrylic so that it would be easy to wash (white gets dirty quickly)
The colour of the fringe, mane and tail can be anything you want - doesnt have to be sparkly/glitter yarn - a good way to use up those odds and ends of yarn. If you want a finer finish, use 4ply.

Luna the Unicorn Scarf by hillandbenz
What is Being Made
Luna the Unicorn scarf is a whimsical knitted accessory inspired by Scotland's national animal. This finished scarf measures 140cm in length and features a three-dimensional unicorn head with a stuffed horn, complete with embroidered facial details. The design combines a long scarf body with an attached sculptural unicorn element, making it both a functional garment and a decorative statement piece.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The scarf construction employs traditional hand-knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The unicorn head component requires additional finishing work including stuffing and embroidery, adding dimensional detail to the piece.
Stitches and Knitting Techniques Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:
- Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches as foundational elements
- Stocking stitch (St-st) – alternating knit and purl rows to create a smooth, classic fabric
- Slip stitch (Sl) for edge management and shaping
- Decrease techniques including Ssk (slip, slip, knit) and psso (pass slipped stitch over) for shaping the unicorn head
- Increase techniques – making extra stitches by knitting into the front and back loop to add fullness where needed
- Through the back loop (tbl) knitting for textural variation
- Short row shaping (turn technique) to create three-dimensional sculpting of the unicorn form
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project requires DK weight yarn (8ply), which is a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating defined stitch definition and drape. The specific yarn quantities needed are:
- 350m of 8ply in white – forms the primary scarf body
- 40m of 8ply in silver grey – used for accent details
- 25-30m of 8ply in bright variegated yarn with lurex – adds sparkle and visual interest (the pattern specifies Spotlight's Kringle Sparkle Bright Mix as the designer's choice)
- 5m of 4ply in black – for embroidered nose and eyes on the unicorn face
- Small amount of polyester stuffing – fills the horn to create dimension
Needles, Hooks, and Tools
The knitting requires two sets of double-pointed needles in different sizes to create gauge variations and shaping:
- 3.25mm double-pointed needles – used for the main scarf construction
- 2.75mm double-pointed needles – used for sections requiring a tighter gauge or finer details
- Small crochet hook – assists with finishing work and securing embroidery elements
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses fundamental knitting stitches, the combination of techniques including short-row shaping, color changes, three-dimensional construction, and embroidery finishing requires prior knitting experience and comfort with pattern reading and stitch manipulation.
