Lovikka Mittens by Beth Brown-Reinsel
What Is Being Made
The Lovikka Mittens are a pair of traditional Swedish mittens originating from northern Sweden, developed in 1892 by Erika Aittamaa. These mittens are designed to be exceptionally thick and durable, constructed to withstand heavy wear across multiple seasons. The pattern includes sizing options for Small Child (6"), Medium Child (6.75"), and Large Child/Small Woman (7.25"), making them suitable for various hand sizes. The mittens feature traditional Scandinavian design elements including embroidered cuffs and braids that reflect authentic Swedish knitting heritage.
Techniques Featured
- Double Cast-On: A foundational technique used to create a sturdy, elastic edge suitable for mittens that require durability and stretch
- Straight Thumb Construction: A method for integrating the thumb that creates a clean, functional fit without complex shaping
- Swirled Round Mitten Tip: A decorative finishing technique that creates a spiral or swirled pattern at the crown of the mitten
- Fulling: A traditional finishing process performed either by hand or machine that thickens and densifies the knitted fabric, creating the characteristic dense, warm mittens for which Lovikka mittens are known
- Traditional Embroidered Cuffs and Braids: Hand embroidery and braided details added to the cuff area, providing authentic Scandinavian aesthetic and cultural significance
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the pattern employs traditional knitting stitches appropriate for working in chunky yarn weight. The mittens are worked in the round, utilizing the straight thumb construction method. The swirled round mitten tip suggests the use of decreases worked in a spiral formation to create the decorative crown shaping. The pattern includes embroidered details worked after the knitting is complete, adding traditional Swedish ornamentation to the finished mittens.
Materials
These mittens are designed to be worked in chunky yarn weight, which contributes to their quick construction and substantial, warm finished fabric. The pattern is compatible with standard knitting needles appropriate for chunky yarn. The fulling process—a key feature of authentic Lovikka mittens—transforms the knitted fabric into a denser, more weather-resistant textile, making these mittens particularly suitable for cold, harsh climates. The chunky yarn weight combined with fulling creates mittens that are both quick to knit and exceptionally long-wearing.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex techniques. The intermediate rating reflects the combination of techniques including the double cast-on, straight thumb construction, and the fulling process, as well as the hand embroidery work required for the traditional cuff details. Knitters should be comfortable working in the round and following detailed finishing instructions.
Historical and Cultural Context
The Lovikka Mitten carries significant historical importance as a traditional Swedish design with documented origins. According to the pattern's historical notes, these mittens were created in response to a specific need for exceptionally durable, thick mittens that could withstand heavy use. The fulling process, which transforms the mittens through washing and brushing, is integral to the authentic Lovikka tradition and contributes to their legendary durability and longevity.
