Llandudno Promenade Shawl by Kath Andrews
What is Being Made
The Llandudno Promenade Shawl is an asymmetrical triangular shawl designed by Kath Andrews. Inspired by the changing shades of the sea and the decorative ironwork found on Llandudno Pier, this knitted shawl combines solid garter stitch sections with delicate lace panels. The design celebrates colour transitions through its construction, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a satisfying blend of simplicity and visual interest.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The foundation of the shawl uses garter stitch, a fundamental knitting stitch that creates a textured, reversible fabric. The shawl features lace panels that interrupt the solid garter stitch sections, adding delicate openwork details that highlight the yarn's colour changes. The shawl is constructed as an asymmetrical triangle, requiring increases along one edge to shape the garment. Knitters are advised to use locking stitch markers on the increase edge to maintain clarity about which side requires shaping throughout the project.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – the primary stitch forming the main body of the shawl
- Lace stitches – creating openwork panels that break up the garter stitch sections
- Increases – worked along the shaping edge to form the asymmetrical triangle
Materials
The Llandudno Promenade Shawl is worked in 4 ply yarn, a lightweight fingering-weight yarn ideal for creating delicate drape and stitch definition. The pattern calls for two distinct yarn types:
- Main colour (MC): Garthenor Organic Preseli, 100% Organic British Wool, 200 metres per 50 grammes; 2 skeins in Rigging
- Contrast colours (CC1–CC5): RiverKnits Nene 4 ply Gradient, 100% Bluefaced Leicester Wool, 5 mini skeins of 80 metres per 20 grammes (400 metres total per set); 1 set in Turquoise. The mini skeins are labelled in shade order from CC1 (darkest) to CC5 (lightest), allowing knitters to work through a gradient of colour transitions
The pattern is designed for use with appropriate knitting needles suited to 4 ply yarn. The combination of British Wool and Bluefaced Leicester Wool provides excellent stitch definition, making the lace panels and colour gradations clearly visible throughout the finished shawl.
