Product Description
Meet Lionel the Lion Hand / Glove Puppet.
Despite the reputation of Lions, Lionel is anything but fierce. He is soft and cuddly and loves to be tickled behind his ears. Lionel loves to make new friends and can spend hours and hours chatting away with anyone he comes across.
Lionel is perfect for interactive play with children of any age. He induces great belly-laughs wherever he goes but also becomes a great friend to all that he meets, no matter how shy the child may be they seem to come out of their shell when interacting with Lionel.
I have had some great feedback from nursery nurses, teachers, parents and child minders alike that my hand puppets are a great tool / help for entertaining, encouraging, engaging and teaching children from a young age.
Made using the Amigurumi technique of continuous rounds. The pattern is in both US and UK terminology. A quick yet effective make for anyone working with children or just for fun with the little ones at home.
Lionel the Lion Hand Puppet by Helen McLean
What Is Being Made
Lionel the Lion Hand Puppet is an intermediate-level crochet toy designed as a wearable puppet that fits over an adult hand. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a charming lion character suitable for interactive play, storytelling, or puppet theater performances. The design is engineered to fit snugly over the hand to prevent sagging at the wrist while allowing for comfortable wear and movement.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern is written in UK crochet terminology, which uses different stitch names than US terminology (for example, UK double crochet equals US single crochet). The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques including chain stitches for foundation, increases and decreases for shaping, and color changes to create the lion's distinctive features.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern utilizes the following crochet stitches and techniques:
- Chain (ch) – used to create foundation chains and joining
- Double Crochet (dc) – the primary stitch throughout the puppet, creating a dense, structured fabric
- Increases (2dc) – two stitches worked into one stitch space to add width and create shaping
- Decreases (dc2tog) – using the invisible decrease method to reduce stitches and create fitted shaping
- Repeat sequences (*…*) – pattern instructions that are repeated to build sections efficiently
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Aran or Worsted weight yarn, with the original design using Drops Paris 50g balls in 100% cotton (75 meters / 82 yards per ball). The specific color palette includes:
- 2 balls of Mustard (41) – the primary color for the lion's body and mane
- 1 ball of Rust (65) – used for accent details
- Small amounts of Brown (44) – for facial features and details
- Small amounts of Powder Pink (58) – for inner ear or facial accents
Cotton yarn is specifically recommended for this project because it provides natural stretch and recovery, allowing the finished puppet to conform comfortably to the hand while maintaining structure. The yarn weight and fiber content ensure the puppet will have appropriate drape and durability for repeated use.
Tools and Notions
Construction requires the following tools and materials:
- 5mm crochet hook – primary hook for main construction
- 4.5mm crochet hook – used for sections requiring tighter gauge or finer details
- 2 x 14mm safety eyes – orange-colored safety eyes are recommended for the lion's expressive gaze
- Yarn needle – for weaving in yarn ends and sewing components together
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 17 stitches and 22 rows in double crochet over a 10 centimeter square. Achieving this gauge is essential for proper fit, as the puppet is intentionally designed to fit snugly over an adult hand. The tight fit prevents the fabric from sagging at the wrist during puppet manipulation, while the cotton fiber's natural elasticity allows for comfortable stretching and movement. Gauge swatching before beginning the project ensures the finished puppet will perform as intended.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping techniques and color changes. The design is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to access the complete instructions digitally. The intermediate skill level reflects the pattern's use of increases, decreases, and multi-color construction rather than simple single-stitch projects.
