Lagoon Blanket by Hello Moon Crochet
Project Overview
The Lagoon Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket pattern designed by Hayley Hall of Hello Moon Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring 84 x 110 cm with a distinctive wavy aesthetic achieved through the strategic combination of simple crochet stitches and color changes.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a large rectangular blanket or throw suitable for home décor or personal use. The design features a wavy texture created through alternating stitch types and strategic color blocking. The pattern is adaptable, allowing crafters to modify the finished size or even create a coordinating cushion cover by adjusting the starting chain length to any multiple of 12 plus 1 for the turning chain.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Lagoon Blanket employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern utilizes color changes worked into the final stitch of each row, with the new color completed before turning. This technique creates clean transitions between the color sections that define the blanket's visual pattern. The wavy effect is generated through the combination and alternation of basic stitches worked in rows, creating organic movement across the fabric.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch) – Used for the foundation and throughout the pattern as needed
- Double Crochet (Dc) – A fundamental short stitch used to build structure
- Half Treble (Htr) – A medium-height stitch that contributes to the textural variation
- Treble (Tr) – A taller stitch used in the pattern, with tension noted at 18 trebles over 8 rows for 10cm
Materials and Tools
The Lagoon Blanket pattern calls for DK weight yarn, with the original design using Paintbox Yarns Simply DK (276 meters per 100g ball, 100% acrylic). The color palette consists of five coordinating shades: 2 balls of Vanilla Cream 107 (A) for the base, and 1 ball each of Bubblegum Pink 150 (B), Blood Orange 119 (C), Mustard Yellow 123 (D), and Marine Blue 133 (E) for color blocking. A 4mm crochet hook is recommended, though the pattern can be adapted by adjusting both yarn weight and hook size proportionally to achieve different finished dimensions.
Pattern Notes
The pattern is written in UK crochet terminology. Tension is noted as non-critical for this project, though variations may affect the total yarn quantities required. The designer works to 18 trebles over 8 rows for 10cm as a reference. The starting chain does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern. Color changes are worked by completing the final stitch of the previous row in the new color before turning, creating seamless transitions between color sections.
