Product Description

Lady Una is a toe-up sock, featuring an easy-to-remember snowdrop lace pattern and delightful little leaves hiding in the calf expansion.

Instructions for the lace are given in both written and charted form. Instructions are given for multiple cuff options, including ribbing, eyelet, and casing.

It is easiest to use one skein for each sock, to avoid changes in dye lot. There will be plenty of yarn left over for most knitters...enough for a pair of ankle socks or other small project.

Intrigued by the pattern but concerned about committing to knee highs? Try Perge, a free mid-calf sock featuring the same foot construction and a simpler lace pattern.

Skills needed: basic decreses, Judy's Magic Cast On, knitting in the round, lifted increases, center double decreases, wrap and turn short rows.

Shoes are [ECCO Sculptured Lace-up Pumps][3] in grey.

Lady Una Socks by Allison Janocha

What Is Being Made

Lady Una is a downloadable knitting pattern for customizable socks designed by Allison Janocha. The pattern produces finished socks with a foot circumference of 8 inches (20 cm) and a calf circumference of 10 inches (25.5 cm) when unstretched. Both foot length and leg height are customizable, allowing knitters to adjust the pattern to their specific measurements and preferences.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several advanced sock-knitting techniques. The pattern is written for Magic Loop construction, a method that allows knitters to work small circumference projects using a single long circular needle. Alternatively, the pattern accommodates two circulars, offering flexibility for knitters who prefer that method. The socks feature multiple casing options—a ribbon casing version, an elastic casing version, and an eyelet ribbing version—each providing different aesthetic and functional approaches to the sock's opening and fit.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Lady Una pattern incorporates ribbing as a primary stitch element, with variations depending on which casing version is chosen. The eyelet ribbing version combines eyelet stitches with ribbing for a decorative, lacy effect at the calf. These stitch patterns create structure and stretch recovery, essential for well-fitting socks that maintain their shape through repeated wear and washing.

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for Madelinetosh Pashmina, a luxury fingering-weight yarn. Two skeins are recommended, providing 720 yards total yardage. The samples shown in the pattern used approximately 450 yards, leaving yardage for customization and adjustments. The pattern samples were knitted in three colorways: Briar (for the casing version), Oceana (for the ribbing version), and Calligraphy (for the eyelet ribbing version).

Needles: The pattern requires US 1.5 (2.5 mm) circular needles in the length needed for Magic Loop construction, or size adjusted as needed to obtain proper gauge. For the ribbon casing version only, an additional US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needle—one size smaller than the gauge needle—is needed for the casing section.

Notions and Finishing Materials:

  • Two stitch markers (additional markers optional for personal preference)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Drawstring threader (optional, useful for the ribbon casing version)
  • 1-inch (25 mm) wide silk ribbon for the ribbon casing version
  • 1/4-inch (6 mm) wide lingerie elastic for the elastic casing version
  • 3/8-inch (9 mm) wide ribbon for the eyelet ribbing version

Pattern Summary

Lady Una offers knitters an intermediate-level sock pattern with sophisticated customization options. The three casing variations—ribbon, elastic, and eyelet ribbing—allow for personalization in both function and appearance. The use of Madelinetosh Pashmina, a premium fingering-weight yarn, combined with Magic Loop or two-circular construction techniques, results in a refined, well-fitted sock suitable for special occasions or as a luxury everyday accessory. The customizable foot length and leg height ensure the pattern can be adapted to individual measurements, making it a versatile addition to any knitter's sock pattern collection.
