Product Description

This is a slightly extended version of my 'Peacock Shawl' which used Scheepjes Whirl yarn. For this 'Lady of the Rings Shawl', I used the lovely, soft fingering (4 ply) 100% Bendigo Woollen Mills Cotton yarn. This shawl features rows of 'rings', which is what suggested the name to me.

Gauge is not crucial to this design, so you can use whatever thickness yarn, and whatever size hook necessary to get a nice drape. Just be aware that thicker yarn will produce a larger finished item.

I would suggest this pattern to be appropriate for intermediate crocheters, though adventurous beginners would probably manage it. There are a couple of diagrams to help decipher how to do the rings - once these are worked out, the rest of the shawl is easy.

What is Being Made

The Lady of the Rings Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl designed by Melody Tallon. This intermediate-level project creates a finished garment measuring approximately 70 centimetres across the centre back, making it a versatile wrap suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This shawl employs fundamental crochet construction methods combined with decorative stitch techniques. The pattern begins with a foundation chain and builds outward using turning rows to create the triangular silhouette characteristic of many shawl designs. The construction method allows for flexibility in final dimensions, as tension is not crucial to the success of the project—crafters can adjust hook size based on personal preference and desired fabric appearance rather than strict gauge requirements.

Stitches Used

The Lady of the Rings Shawl incorporates several core crochet stitches to create texture and visual interest:

  • Treble (tr) – a tall stitch forming the primary structural element
  • Double crochet (dc) – used for shaping and detail work
  • Chain (ch) – foundational stitches creating spaces and transitions
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – for joining and finishing
  • Cluster (cl) – a special stitch created by working multiple yarn-overs and loops together in the same stitch, producing a textured, dimensional effect
  • Cluster group (cl gr) – clusters worked in combination with chain spaces to create decorative motifs
  • Beginning cluster (beg cl) – a variation of the cluster stitch used at row or round beginnings

The cluster stitches form the signature design element, created by inserting the hook into a designated stitch, drawing yarn through, and consolidating multiple loops on the hook before completing the stitch. This technique produces raised, decorative elements that give the shawl its distinctive appearance.

Materials Required

Crafters will need 1300 metres of 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn to complete this project. A 3.5 to 3.75 millimetre crochet hook is recommended, though the pattern's flexibility allows for hook size adjustment based on personal tension and desired fabric characteristics. The 4-ply weight provides a lightweight, drapeable fabric ideal for a shawl's intended function.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow written instructions with abbreviations. The special cluster stitches require attention to detail but are well within reach for crafters with foundational crochet experience.

Brilliant service.

It's a beautiful shawl and such an unusual pattern. It's a little tricky to work out the bottom half of the rings. I found the instructions and sketches not terribly helpful. On the other hand with a bit of patience it can be done. It is delicate and pretty. I'm enjoying doing it as once you have the hang of it, it is an enjoyable challenge.
