Product Description
These stranded socks are knit from the cuff down. The pattern is written for double pointed needles but can easily be adapted for Magic Loop or two circular needles. The pattern is written in English. The socks are mirrored with horses running clockwise on on sock and counterclockwise on the other. The horseshoes on the toes reflect the direction of the horses.
The lengths of leg and foot can be adapted and two circumference options are available (64 and 80 stitches). Two cuff options are given. Version 1 is a classic ribbed cuff with a trick to avoid purl dots when changing colours in a ribbed section. Version 2 is a two coloured rolled cuff.
**Skills required:**Knit and purl stitches, basic increase and decrease techniques, stranded knitting in the round, picking up stitches, chart reading, grafting (kitchener stitch), basic understanding of sock construction
Lady Farrier Socks by Maike Schroeder
What is Being Made
Lady Farrier is a pair of stranded knit socks designed by independent designer Maike Schroeder. These are mirrored socks featuring a horse motif that runs clockwise on the left sock and counterclockwise on the right sock, with horseshoes on the toes that reflect the direction of the horses. The socks are worked from the cuff down and include a heel flap with striped gussets.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques:
- Stranded colorwork: The socks feature a two-color stranded knitting technique, creating the horse and horseshoe motifs using contrasting yarn colors throughout the leg and foot sections
- Cuff-down construction: The socks are knit from the cuff downward toward the toe, allowing for adjustable leg length
- Heel flap and gusset: A traditional heel flap with striped gussets provides structure and durability at the heel
- Mirrored shaping: Separate instructions are provided for the right and left sock to achieve the mirrored horse design
- Method flexibility: While the pattern samples were knit on double pointed needles, the construction can be easily adapted for magic loop or two circular needles techniques
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with colorwork techniques. Stranded knitting stitches are worked throughout to create the horse and horseshoe patterns, while the heel flap employs slip stitch construction for reinforcement. The gussets incorporate striped sections using the two contrasting yarns.
Yarn and Needles
Lady Farrier requires approximately 100g total of fingering weight sock yarn: roughly 60g in one color and 40g in a contrasting color. The pattern accommodates two gauge options for different fabric densities. A gauge of 42 stitches per 10cm (4 inches) using 2-2.5mm double pointed needles or circular needles will produce a sock with a 20.5cm (8 inches) circumference and a quite dense fabric. For a looser fabric, knitters can work at a gauge of 36 stitches per 10cm using size S needles for the same circumference. Additional notions include 5 stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn or a second set of needles for the cuff option 2. Row gauge is not critical since the lengths of legs and feet are adjustable.
