Lace Detail Cardigan by Sian Brown
What is Being Made
This is a knitted cardigan featuring elegant lace detailing, designed by independent designer Sian Brown. The cardigan is a classic wardrobe piece with button closure, available in seven different sizes to fit bust measurements from 82cm (32 inches) to 112cm (44 inches). The finished garment offers a flattering fit with actual bust measurements ranging from 92cm to 122cm (36 to 48 inches), and a shoulder length between 59cm and 65cm (23¼ to 25½ inches). The cardigan includes short sleeves measuring 15cm (6 inches) in length.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its distinctive appearance. The pattern begins with a ribbed edge created by knitting five rows with smaller needles to provide structure and prevent curling. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The most notable technique feature is the lace panel detail, which is strategically incorporated into the design. This lace panel utilizes yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterning, adding visual interest and a delicate quality to the finished cardigan.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st st): The primary stitch used for the main body of the cardigan, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric
- Knit Stitch: Used throughout the pattern for various sections and shaping
- Purl Stitch: Used to create texture and structure, particularly in the lace panel rows
- Yarn Over (yrn/yf): Creates the openwork holes characteristic of lace patterns
- Knit Two Together (k2 tog): A right-leaning decrease used in the lace panel
- Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (skpo): A left-leaning decrease used in the lace panel for balanced shaping
- Yarn Over and Knit (yon): Creates additional openwork detail in the lace panel
- Slip, Yarn Over, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (sl 1, yon, k1, psso): A decorative decrease technique used within the lace pattern
Materials
The Lace Detail Cardigan is worked in DK weight yarn, specifically Rowan Pure Life Revive in the colorway Ironstone 467. The yarn quantity required depends on the size selected, ranging from 8 balls (50g each) for the smallest size to 14 balls for the largest size, providing flexibility for different garment dimensions. Two pairs of knitting needles are required: 3.25mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed edging and 4mm (US 6) needles for the main body and lace panels. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows over a 10cm (4-inch) square when working stockinette stitch on 4mm needles. Three buttons are needed to complete the cardigan's button closure.
