Product Description
This lovely neck warmer got the name from the eyelet effect on the front and the waffle stitch looking like ladders in the straight part. This is a written pattern worked flat and is one piece. Finished with a pretty scarf pin, you could use fancy buttons instead as snap fasteners hold the neck warmer together. 8 inches 23cm wide and 32 inches 81 cm long I used one 100gm ball of Stylecraft special Aran in gold colour The purple photo was reflective yarn and knitted up looser than the gold, but very pretty.
Lace and Ladder Neck Warmer by Seasonknits
What Is Being Made
This is a knitted neck warmer designed as a single-piece, flat-worked accessory that combines decorative lace with textured stitch patterns. The finished piece measures approximately 8 inches wide by 32 inches long, making it a versatile neckwear option that wraps comfortably around the neck and fastens securely with snap fasteners or decorative buttons. The design features a distinctive front panel with an eyelet lace effect paired with a waffle stitch texture that resembles ladder patterns, creating visual interest and dimension throughout the garment.
Techniques and Construction
This neck warmer is worked flat on straight needles in a single piece, making it an accessible project for knitters new to garment construction. The pattern employs a combination of knitting techniques to achieve its signature aesthetic. The eyelet effect on the front creates an open, lacy appearance through strategic yarn overs and decreases, while the waffle stitch sections provide texture and structure. The piece is finished with practical closures: either snap fasteners (poppers) positioned at intervals to hold the neck warmer securely in place, or decorative buttons combined with snap fasteners for both function and style. A scarf pin can be added to the front as an optional decorative finishing touch.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch – the foundation stitch worked over the majority of the piece on 5mm needles
- Eyelet Stitch – created through yarn overs to produce the lace effect on the front panel
- Waffle Stitch – textured stitch that creates the ladder-like appearance in the straight sections of the design
- Yarn Overs – used to create the openwork lace details characteristic of the eyelet pattern
Materials and Specifications
This pattern requires 200 yards of Aran weight yarn, approximately one 100g skein. The recommended needles are 5mm (US 8) straight needles. The gauge is 18 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when working stocking stitch on 5mm needles. Obtaining the correct gauge is important for achieving the intended finished dimensions.
For closures, you will need 4 snap fasteners (poppers) to secure the neck warmer, or alternatively, 4 decorative buttons paired with snap fasteners for a mixed closure approach. A pretty scarf pin is optional but adds an elegant finishing detail to the front of the piece. The pattern is written and suitable for beginner-level knitters, making it an excellent introduction to combining lace and textured stitches in a wearable accessory.
Design Flexibility
The pattern offers customization options for both length and finishing details. While the standard finished length is 32 inches, knitters can adjust this measurement according to personal preference. The closure method can be tailored to individual style: the scarf pin provides a classic, elegant look; buttons offer a more decorative appearance; and snap fasteners ensure the neck warmer stays securely in place during wear. This flexibility allows each maker to personalize the finished garment to suit their aesthetic preferences and functional needs.
