Kindanimals Monkey Amigurumi by Onpoki

What Is Being Made

The Kindanimals Monkey is a stuffed amigurumi toy designed by Paula Fuentes of Onpoki. This crocheted plush animal stands approximately 33 cm (13 inches) tall and measures 11 cm (4.5 inches) wide, making it a medium-sized decorative or play toy suitable for children and collectors. The finished monkey features distinct body parts including a main body, head, four limbs, ears, and facial details.

Craft and Technique

This project uses the crochet technique to create an amigurumi—a Japanese method of crocheting small stuffed toys and animals. Amigurumi construction involves crocheting flat pieces or working in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional forms, which are then stuffed with fiberfill and sewn together. The Kindanimals Monkey is classified as a beginner-level project, making it accessible to crocheters new to amigurumi or those developing their skills. The design emphasizes proper tension and stitch consistency to avoid gaps in the fabric, which is essential for containing the filling material.

Stitches and Construction Details

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern instructions provided, amigurumi construction typically relies on fundamental crochet stitches worked in continuous rounds. The pattern requires attention to maintaining even tension throughout to ensure a smooth, hole-free fabric. The monkey is constructed from multiple crocheted components—including the body, head, four separate limbs, two ears, paws, and a snout—which are individually completed and then assembled together through sewing or joining techniques.

Materials Required

Yarn:

  • Weight: Aran weight yarn (also known as medium weight, 4-ply, 10-ply, or Afghan weight)
  • Colour 1 (main body, ears, legs, and arms): Approximately 125 grams
  • Colour 2 (paws, snout, and inside of ears): Approximately 20 grams

Hook and Tools:

  • Crochet hook size: 3 mm (US C2 / UK-CAN 11)
  • Yarn needle for sewing pieces together and weaving in ends

Notions and Filling:

  • Safety eyes: 10 mm size
  • Eyelashes (optional): Black embroidery thread
  • Polyester fiberfill: Approximately 50 grams for stuffing (also called wadding or pillow filling)

Yarn Weight Flexibility

The pattern notes that any yarn weight can be used to create the Kindanimals Monkey, provided the crochet hook size is appropriately matched to the yarn weight. Adjusting yarn and hook sizes will change the final dimensions of the completed toy—using thicker yarn and larger hooks will produce a larger monkey, while thinner yarn with smaller hooks will yield a smaller version. The critical requirement is selecting a hook size that creates tight, consistent stitches with no visible gaps between them, ensuring the filling remains secure within the crocheted fabric.
