Jeannine Square Shoulder Bag by Amanda Shaskey

Project Overview

The Jeannine Square Shoulder Bag is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Amanda Shaskey. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a structured square shoulder bag featuring a contrasting color-block design and adjustable shoulder strap.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a finished square shoulder bag measuring approximately 6.5" x 6.5" (16cm x 16cm) with a shoulder strap approximately 26" (66cm) in length. The bag features a two-color design using Slate Grey and Mustard Yellow, creating a modern aesthetic suitable for everyday carry or as a finished handmade gift.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Jeannine Square Shoulder Bag employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques. The pattern utilizes textured post stitches, specifically the front post double triple crochet (FPDTC), which creates dimensional detail by working around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops. This technique adds visual interest and structural definition to the finished piece. The pattern also incorporates basic shaping and color changes to achieve the two-tone design.

Stitches and Abbreviations

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology and includes the following stitches:

  • CH (Chain) – the foundation stitch used to create the base of the project
  • SL ST (Slip Stitch) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • SC (Single Crochet) – a basic short stitch providing structure and density
  • DC (Double Crochet) – a taller stitch used throughout the pattern for body and strap construction
  • FPDTC (Front Post Double Triple Crochet) – an advanced post stitch created by yarning over 3 times, inserting the hook from front to back around the post of a stitch, then completing the stitch by yarning over and pulling through 2 loops four times. This creates raised, textured detail.

Pattern notes indicate that CH3 counts as a stitch in this pattern, while CH1 does not count as a stitch, affecting stitch counts and pattern construction.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for Paintbox Cotton Aran yarn in two colors – 1x 50g ball in Slate Grey (Color A) and 1x 50g ball in Mustard Yellow (Color B). The pattern specifies Aran/Worsted weight cotton yarn, though any cotton yarn in this weight category may be substituted. Cotton yarn provides structure, breathability, and a crisp finish ideal for a structured bag.

Hook and Notions: A 4.00mm/G crochet hook is used to work the Aran weight yarn. Additional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, one button for closure, sewing thread, and a sewing needle for attaching the button securely to the finished bag.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 2.5" x 2.5" (6.5cm x 6.5cm) over Rounds 1-2, which helps ensure the finished bag achieves its intended dimensions. The completed bag measures approximately 6.5" x 6.5" (16cm x 16cm), making it a compact, portable accessory, while the shoulder strap reaches approximately 26" (66cm) in length, allowing comfortable wear across the body or over the shoulder.
