Product Description
These are children's mittens in 3 sizes: 1-2 yrs, 2-5 yrs and 5-8 yrs. They are knitted on dpns in the round, but magic loop may also be used. Gauge s 28 sts & 30 rows per 10 cm (4 in).
I have used a 3 ply sport/fine weight yarn (Drops Baby Alpaca Silk) that has 167 metres per 50 grams, and recommends needle size 3.5 mm. Note that I have gone down a needle size to 3.0 mm to achieve gauge.
In addition I have used a Kid Silk yarn held together with the main yarn either for part of the cuff, the whole cuff, or the entire mitten. This is up to you to decide what you prefer.
Main yarn: Approx. 25 grams main yarn Additional yarn: Approx. 10 grams for the whole mitten Size 3.0 mm double pointed needles (or size needed to achieve gauge). I recommend using wooden needles when using silk yarn to keep the stitches from sliding off. Pointed needle for weaving in ends.
Isabell Mittens Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Isabell Mittens are children's knitted mittens designed by Hilde Ropstad of Smaatterier. This pattern offers three size options to fit children aged 1-2 years, 2-5 years, and 5-8 years, making it a versatile design for growing children. The mittens feature a traditional construction with both a hand and cuff component, providing warmth and coverage for small hands.
Sizes and Fit
The pattern includes detailed sizing information across three children's sizes:
- 1-2 years: 10 cm (4") hand circumference, 10 cm (4") hand length, and 16 cm (6.5") total hand and cuff length
- 2-5 years: 14 cm (5.5") hand circumference, 12.5 cm (4.5") hand length, and 19.5 cm (7.5") total hand and cuff length
- 5-8 years: 17 cm (6.5") hand circumference, 15 cm (6") hand length, and 23 cm (9") total hand and cuff length
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Isabell Mittens are worked in the round, a fundamental knitting technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for mittens. This method eliminates the need for seaming and produces a smooth, professional finish. Working in the round requires circular needles or double-pointed needles and allows for continuous knitting without turning the work.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. This pattern requires a gauge of 28 stitches and 30 rows per 10 cm (4") when knit in the round. Checking gauge before beginning ensures that your finished mittens will match the intended sizing.
Yarn and Materials
The Isabell Mittens are designed to be worked with sport weight or fine weight yarn, specifically a 3-ply yarn such as Drops Baby Alpaca Silk. This yarn weight provides a delicate, lightweight fabric suitable for children's garments. The recommended yarn has approximately 167 metres per 50 grams, offering good yardage for small projects.
For needles, while the yarn typically recommends size 3.5 mm needles, the pattern calls for going down half a needle size to 3.0 mm needles to achieve the correct gauge. This adjustment ensures the fabric is dense enough to provide proper warmth and structure for children's mittens.
Skill Level
The Isabell Mittens are rated as an intermediate difficulty project. This classification reflects that the pattern assumes familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques, including casting on, basic stitches, and working in the round, while not requiring advanced shaping or colorwork skills.
