Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Xander Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring an intarsia moniker chart design. The pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted pullover garment with ribbed cuffs and waistband, suitable for multiple size ranges from toddler through older child dimensions.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty. The design incorporates intarsia knitting, a technique where different colored yarns are used to create a personalized moniker or name chart integrated into the body of the sweater. Intarsia differs from stranded colorwork in that each color section uses separate yarn bobbins rather than carrying yarn across the back, resulting in a smoother finished fabric without the bulk of floats.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st) — The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric
- 2x2 Ribbing — A knit-purl pattern (K2, P2 repeat) used for the cuffs and waistband to create elasticity and structure
- Purl Stitches — Used in combination with knit stitches for ribbing detail
- Decreases — Including P2tog (purl two together) decreases for shaping the armholes and creating fitted proportions
- Intarsia Chart Work — Following a personalized moniker chart to integrate the name design into the front of the sweater
Construction and Shaping
The sweater is constructed using a traditional flat knitting method with separate pieces for the back and front. The pattern includes detailed shaping instructions for armholes with strategic decreases worked at the beginning of rows. The ribbed sections are worked first on smaller needles to create definition, then the main body is worked in stockinette stitch on larger needles. Multiple size options are provided with bracketed stitch counts, allowing customization for different child sizes.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern uses 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight, fine yarn ideal for children's garments. The pattern requires two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette body. The use of two needle sizes is a standard technique to ensure that ribbing remains elastic and tight while the main fabric has appropriate drape and fit. Yarn amounts are specified based on achieving the correct tension and using the recommended yarn weight throughout the project.
