Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Sophie Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern is designed by an independent designer and offers multiple size options to accommodate different ages and measurements. The sweater combines classic construction techniques with decorative intarsia charting, making it an engaging intermediate-level knitting project.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's pullover sweater with a crew neckline. The garment is constructed in pieces (back, front, and sleeves) that are worked separately and then assembled. The sweater features intarsia colorwork, which involves knitting with multiple yarn colors to create a personalized moniker or name chart design integrated into the fabric.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique, where different colored yarns are used to create a charted design (the Sophie Moniker). This method requires careful color management and bobbins to prevent long floats across the back of the work.
- Ribbed Edgings: The pattern uses 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) for the cuffs and neckline, providing elasticity and a finished appearance.
- Armhole Shaping: Decreases are worked at the beginning of rows to create fitted armholes, with specific decrease sequences based on size.
- Stocking Stitch: The main fabric is worked in stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), creating a smooth, classic knit surface.
- Thumb Method Cast-On: The pattern specifies using the thumb method for casting on, a fundamental technique for creating a flexible foundation edge.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric texture.
- Purl (P): Used in ribbed sections and for charted intarsia design elements.
- Purl 2 Together (P2tog): A left-leaning decrease used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas.
- Stocking Stitch (St-st): The combination of knit rows and purl rows that creates the smooth fabric base throughout the sweater body.
- 2x2 Rib: A textured stitch pattern alternating knits and purls, used for elastic edgings.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight, versatile yarn suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main stocking stitch body. The use of two needle sizes is a standard technique to create a tighter, more elastic ribbed edge compared to the looser main fabric.
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight. Multiple size options are provided, with corresponding stitch counts and row lengths varying to accommodate different measurements. The pattern includes provisions for stitch holders to manage stitches during construction, particularly for the neckline shaping.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic knitting techniques including casting on, ribbing, and stocking stitch. The intarsia colorwork element adds complexity, requiring knitters to manage multiple yarn colors, read a chart, and maintain consistent tension across color changes. The multiple size options and shaping instructions also require attention to pattern details and row counting.
