Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Shawn Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intarsia knitted children's sweater featuring a personalized chart design. The pattern uses the intarsia technique to incorporate a custom name or moniker into the garment, making it a unique and personalized piece suitable for children. The sweater is constructed using classic knitting methods with shaping for a fitted silhouette.
Craft and Technique
The sweater is created using knitting as the primary craft. The main construction employs stockinette stitch (st-st) throughout the body pieces, which creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying intarsia colorwork. The intarsia technique is used to knit the personalized chart design into the front of the sweater, allowing for detailed, multi-colored pattern work without carrying yarn across the back of the fabric.
The pattern includes 2x2 ribbing at the cuffs and waistband, which provides elasticity and a finished edge. This ribbed section is worked over 8 rows using the alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2x2 pattern (knit 2, purl 2, repeated across the row).
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater for a smooth, professional finish
- 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit 2, purl 2 pattern used for cuffs and waistband sections
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas
- Intarsia Colorwork: Technique for incorporating the personalized chart design using separate yarn colors
Construction Details
The sweater is worked in multiple sizes, with stitch counts and row counts varying by size throughout the pattern. The back piece is cast on with 70 stitches and worked in stockinette stitch for approximately 40 to 82 rows (depending on size), followed by armhole shaping. The front piece follows a similar construction but includes the intarsia chart design integrated into the stockinette stitch fabric.
Armhole shaping is achieved through decrease stitches worked at each end of rows, reducing the stitch count progressively. The pattern specifies decreasing 1 stitch at each end of every row over 4 to 6 rows depending on the size being knitted. Armholes are shaped to measure between 10 and 14 centimeters (approximately 4 to 5.5 inches) depending on the finished size.
The ribbed sections are worked using a consistent 2x2 rib pattern, which is established over the first two rows and then repeated. This provides stretch and recovery at the edges of the garment.
Materials and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, which is a lightweight yarn weight suitable for creating a refined, fitted children's garment. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main stockinette stitch sections and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed cuffs and waistband. The use of smaller needles for ribbing creates a tighter, more elastic fabric compared to the body.
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight and needle size. Intarsia work requires separate bobbins or balls of yarn for each color section used in the personalized chart design.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches (stockinette and ribbing) are fundamental knitting techniques, the intarsia colorwork technique requires intermediate skills to manage multiple yarn colors, tension consistency across color changes, and accurate chart reading. Shaping techniques including decreases and armhole construction also contribute to the intermediate rating.
