Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Rory Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The pattern provides a charted design (the Rory Moniker Chart) that allows knitters to incorporate a personalized moniker or name into the front of the garment. The sweater is constructed with separate back and front pieces that are worked flat before assembly, making it suitable for knitters seeking to create a custom, named garment for children.
Intarsia Technique Overview
Intarsia is an advanced colorwork method in knitting that allows for the incorporation of large, detailed pictorial or text-based designs into knitwear. Unlike stranded colorwork (Fair Isle), intarsia uses separate lengths or bobbins of yarn for each color section, with colors twisted together at color changes to prevent holes. This technique is ideal for creating personalized elements like monograms or names, as demonstrated in this Rory Moniker Chart design. The method produces a single-thickness fabric with no floats on the reverse side, resulting in a neat, professional finish suitable for children's wear.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, worked in knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows to create a smooth, flat fabric
- 2x2 Ribbing (2x2 rib): Used for the cuff and waistband sections, alternating knit 2 stitches with purl 2 stitches to create an elastic, fitted edge
- Knit (k): Basic knit stitch
- Purl (p): Basic purl stitch
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A left-leaning decrease used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas
Construction and Shaping
The sweater is worked in pieces, beginning with the back panel. The back is cast on using 3¼mm needles with 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on size. The pattern includes a ribbed cuff section worked in 2x2 rib, followed by the main body worked in stockinette stitch. The front piece follows a similar construction but incorporates the intarsia chart for the personalized moniker design. Armhole shaping is achieved through decreasing 1 stitch at each end of every row over 4 to 6 rows, depending on size, creating a fitted sleeve cap. The pattern provides multiple size options with graduated stitch counts and row lengths, allowing for customization across different children's sizes.
Materials and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that produces a refined, durable fabric appropriate for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main body in stockinette stitch. The use of slightly larger needles for the stockinette creates a subtle difference in gauge between the ribbed and smooth sections, enhancing the definition of the garment's structure. Specific yarn yardage requirements are based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches and construction techniques are foundational, the intarsia colorwork technique requires experience with managing multiple yarn colors, reading charts, and executing color changes cleanly. Knitters should be comfortable with basic shaping, gauge adjustment, and following detailed written and charted instructions before attempting this project.
