Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Reese Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design, specifically incorporating a personalized moniker chart. The garment is constructed with a classic pullover silhouette, including a shaped back and front, armhole shaping, and ribbed edging for a finished, wearable sweater suitable for children in multiple sizes.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project designed at an intermediate difficulty level. The primary technique is intarsia, which is a method of creating multicolored patterns by knitting with different colored yarns in separate sections of the fabric. Unlike stranded colorwork (Fair Isle), intarsia uses individual bobbins of yarn for each color block, creating a smooth, flat fabric without floats on the reverse side. This technique is ideal for large, bold design elements like personalized moniker charts on children's garments.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a V-pattern texture on the right side
- 2x2 Ribbing (2x2 rib): Used for edging and cuffs, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a repeating pattern (K2, P2) to provide elasticity and structure
- Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches: Fundamental stitches forming the basis of the ribbed sections
- Decrease stitches (p2tog): Purl two stitches together for shaping armholes and other fitted areas
Construction and Shaping Details
The sweater is worked in pieces, with separate instructions for the back and front sections. The pattern includes multiple size options with stitch counts provided in brackets for different measurements. The back begins with casting on 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches using 2¾mm needles, followed by ribbed edging worked on 3¼mm needles. The body is worked in stockinette stitch with specified row counts varying by size (40 [50:60:72:82] rows). Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic decreases at each end of rows over 4 [4:5:5:6] rows, reducing stitches to 55 [63:67:75:79]. The front follows similar construction with intarsia colorwork integration for the moniker chart placement. Armholes are shaped to measure 10 [11:12:13:14]cm (4 [4¼:4¾:5¼:5½]in) for proper fit.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern uses 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a lightweight, finely detailed fabric suitable for children's garments. The yarn amounts are calculated based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used as directed. Two needle sizes are required: 2¾mm needles for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, and 3¼mm needles for the main body worked in stockinette stitch. The use of two needle sizes creates the proper gauge and fabric density for both the elastic ribbing and the smooth intarsia colorwork sections.
Intarsia Moniker Chart Application
The personalized moniker chart is integrated into the front of the sweater using the intarsia technique. This allows for a custom, professional-looking initial or name to be knitted directly into the fabric using contrasting yarn colors. The chart would be followed row by row during the stockinette stitch sections of the front piece, with separate yarn bobbins used for each color area to maintain clean color transitions without visible floats on the reverse side.
