Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Lewis Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The garment features a personalized moniker chart, allowing crafters to incorporate custom lettering or initials into the sweater design. The pattern provides multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements, making it a versatile project for young wearers.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project classified at intermediate difficulty level. The primary construction method is stockinette stitch (st-st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric suitable for children's garments. The intarsia technique is the defining feature of this design—intarsia knitting allows crafters to incorporate contrasting colored yarn to create detailed pictorial or text-based designs within the knitted fabric, in this case enabling the personalization with the Lewis moniker chart.
Stitches and Construction Details
The sweater employs several key stitching techniques throughout its construction:
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used for the main body and sleeves, creating a smooth, finished appearance
- 2x2 Ribbing: Used for the cuffs and waistband, providing elasticity and a fitted finish. The ribbing is worked over 7 rows using alternating knit 2, purl 2 sequences
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used strategically for shaping the garment, particularly in armhole and neckline shaping
- Intarsia Technique: Applied to incorporate the Lewis moniker chart design into the sweater body
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern is graded across multiple size options, with stitch counts and row counts varying by size. For example, the back panel begins with 70 stitches cast on using the thumb method, then increases to between 78 and 102 stitches depending on the selected size. Row counts for different sections range from 40 to 82 rows for the initial body work, with additional rows specified for armhole shaping (4 to 6 rows of decreases) and continued shaping until armholes reach 10 to 14 centimeters (4 to 5½ inches) in depth.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn suitable for children's garments that provides good stitch definition for the intarsia design. The pattern requires two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The use of two needle sizes creates the proper gauge and elasticity contrast between the fitted ribbed edges and the body of the sweater. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight.
Design Features
The sweater includes both a back and front panel, with the front featuring the personalized Lewis moniker chart. Armhole shaping is incorporated through strategic decreases, and the pattern provides detailed instructions for shaping the neckline. The construction method allows for stitch holders to be used to temporarily hold stitches during the shaping process, a common technique in sweater construction that enables seamless finishing of necklines and other details.
