Product Description

This is really quick to knit because of the yarn thickness; super easy to make once you master the brioche stitch (explanations below). The brioche stitch looks great in this extra thick yarn and gives this twisted cowl the coziness factor.

Level: Beginner

Notes: this cowl will stretch after washing so keep in mind that it needs to be knit in a smaller size to allow stretching. This cowl is knit using 1 full ball of the specified yarn but you may need more or less to achieve the same result with a different yarn.

Abbreviations: k = knit sl = slip pwise = purlwise – as if to purl yf = yarn forward - bring working yarn in front of your work k2tog = knit 2 together

Pattern not to be reproduced, sold or knit for resale or profit – this pattern can be shared provided credit is given to Sophie's Knit Stuff.

Project Overview

The Infinity Super Chunky Cowl is a quick-to-knit cowl design created by Sophie Le Cuiche. This project is ideal for knitters seeking a cozy accessory that works up rapidly due to the substantial yarn weight used. The finished cowl features a twisted construction that delivers exceptional warmth and comfort, making it a practical addition to any winter wardrobe.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces an infinity-style cowl—a circular, tube-shaped neck accessory that can be worn looped around the neck for extra warmth and layering options. The cowl's design emphasizes texture and visual interest through stitch selection, creating an attractive finished piece suitable for gifting or personal use.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

Rated at beginner level, this cowl becomes accessible once knitters master the brioche stitch technique. The pattern includes detailed explanations of the brioche stitch, making it an excellent project for those looking to expand their stitch repertoire. The thickness of the yarn compensates for complexity, allowing the project to work up quickly and maintain visual impact despite the intermediate stitch work involved.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Infinity Super Chunky Cowl employs the brioche stitch as its primary construction method. The brioche stitch creates a distinctive twisted appearance and contributes significantly to the cowl's visual appeal and texture. The pattern utilizes several fundamental knitting abbreviations and techniques:

  • Brioche Stitch: The foundation stitch that creates the characteristic twisted, dimensional look of this cowl
  • Slip Stitch (sl pwise): Slipping stitches purlwise to maintain proper stitch orientation
  • Yarn Forward (yf): Bringing the working yarn to the front of the work to create yarn overs
  • Knit 2 Together (k2tog): A basic decrease that reduces stitch count and shapes the fabric
  • Knit Stitch (k): The fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern

The pattern begins with a setup row that establishes the brioche stitch foundation, followed by repeated rows that maintain the stitch pattern. The repetitive nature of the brioche stitch rows makes the knitting meditative and rhythm-based, allowing experienced knitters to work on the project without constant pattern reference.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for 1 x 100g ball of Wendy Serenity Super Chunky yarn. This substantial yarn weight is essential to the project's quick completion time and contributes to the cowl's luxurious, cozy appearance. The super chunky weight creates bold stitch definition, making the brioche stitch pattern clearly visible in the finished fabric.

Needles: Knitters should use 2 x 10mm needles in US size 15. The pattern offers flexibility in needle configuration—the cowl can be knitted using traditional straight needles worked in the round, or alternatively using a 10mm circular needle (US 15) if knitting the cowl flat. This flexibility accommodates different knitting preferences and available needle collections.

Construction Notes

An important consideration for this pattern is yarn behavior after washing. The Wendy Serenity Super Chunky yarn will stretch following laundering, so knitters should intentionally work the cowl in a smaller finished size to accommodate this stretching. This ensures the cowl maintains proper fit and doesn't become oversized after the first wash. Accounting for post-wash stretch during the planning phase prevents fit issues and extends the garment's wearable lifespan.

The pattern begins by casting on 20 stitches, establishing a manageable stitch count that works quickly in super chunky yarn. The straightforward stitch counts and repetitive pattern rows make this an efficient project for completing in a single sitting or across just a few knitting sessions.
