Product Description
This shawl was designed to use up lots of oddments of yarn. It needs two contrasting groups of colours. If you prefer, you can use two ‘normal’ plain yarns or either one or two variegated yarns. You will need approximately 450 metres (500 yards) of bright and the same of dark, with extra for the border.
When you look straight at the knitting you only see stripes. The criss-cross pattern is revealed when you look from the side.
Illusion knitting is not difficult. It is just like knitting stripes.
Illusions of Grandeur Knitting Shawl by Steve Plummer & Pat Ashforth
What is Being Made
Illusions of Grandeur is an illusion knitting shawl designed by Steve Plummer and Pat Ashforth for Woolly Thoughts. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a striking visual effect through the strategic use of contrasting yarn colors. The shawl is specifically engineered to utilize yarn oddments—leftover yarn scraps from other projects—making it an excellent stash-busting design that transforms small quantities of yarn into a cohesive, finished garment.
Design Concept and Color Options
The shawl requires two distinct color groups that work together to create the illusion effect. Designers and knitters have flexibility in their color choices. The original shawl photographed uses 'dark' and 'bright' color combinations, but the pattern accommodates numerous other color pairings. Potential color combinations include pastels paired with dark shades, reds contrasted with blues, browns paired with yellows, or any other complementary color combinations that suit your available yarn oddments.
Yarn Requirements and Specifications
The shawl requires approximately 450 metres (500 yards) of yarn in each of the two color groups, totaling around 900 metres of yarn for the main shawl body. Additional yarn is needed for the border; the dark color group border shown in the pattern photographs used approximately 150 metres. The pattern was designed and tested using Double Knitting (DK) weight yarn, which produces the shawl shown in the photographs. However, the pattern is adaptable to other yarn weights, though this will affect the overall finished size of the shawl.
Yarn Selection Guidelines
The yarns selected should be smooth or relatively smooth in texture. The pattern specifically advises against using textured or fluffy yarns, as these would blur and obscure the illusion effect that is central to the design. This texture requirement ensures that the visual pattern created by the color changes remains sharp and clearly visible in the finished shawl.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Illusion knitting is the primary technique used in this shawl. This specialized knitting method creates optical illusions and patterns through the strategic placement of contrasting colors within the knit structure. The interplay between the two color groups produces a visual effect that emerges from how the colors interact across the fabric, rather than from complex stitch patterns alone. This technique allows relatively straightforward knitting to produce sophisticated, eye-catching results.
Skill Level and Project Suitability
Classified as an intermediate difficulty project, Illusions of Grandeur is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. The intermediate rating reflects both the illusion knitting technique and the shawl construction, making it an appropriate challenge for knitters looking to expand their technical repertoire beyond basic projects.
