What Is Being Made

Illusions is a knitted cowl pattern designed by Sharon Lex. This project creates a circular neckwear piece worked in the round using an adaptation of the Maze Pattern from Barbara G. Walker's A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns (page 69). The cowl features a visually striking design created through contrasting colors and strategic stitch placement, resulting in an optical illusion effect.

Construction and Customization

The cowl is constructed by casting on stitches to circular needles and joining to work continuously in the round. The pattern is highly customizable in terms of both length and width. To make the cowl longer, the cast-on stitches can be increased in multiples of 14. To make the cowl wider, knitters can increase the number of pattern repeats; the designer's example uses 3 repeats of the pattern rows. This flexibility allows crafters to adjust the finished dimensions to their preferences.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques:

• Working in the round: The cowl is worked continuously on circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming
• Color work: The pattern uses two contrasting colors (referred to as A and B) to create the visual illusion effect
• Slip stitches: Slip stitches worked purl-wise with yarn in back are used strategically throughout the pattern rows to create texture and the maze-like design
• Knit and purl stitches: Basic knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the edging and pattern sections
• Stitch abbreviations used: K (knit), SL (slip stitch purl-wise with yarn in back)

The pattern begins with a 4-row edging worked in stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows), followed by the main pattern rows that alternate between a textured row featuring the slip stitch sequences and knit rows that maintain color consistency.

Materials and Tools

The Illusions cowl requires the following materials:

• Yarn: 2 skeins of Silky Smooth by Galiana Creations in contrasting colors. This is a fingering weight yarn with a luxurious fiber blend of 50% silk and 50% superwash merino, providing both sheen and easy care
• Needles: Size 4 circular needles in 24-inch length for working the cowl in the round

The combination of silk and superwash merino creates a fabric with excellent drape and a subtle sheen, making this cowl suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions. The fingering weight yarn allows for detailed stitch definition, which is essential for showcasing the intricate Maze Pattern adaptation.
