Ikuisesti Knitted Socks by Sarita Kotkavalkama
What is Being Made
Ikuisesti is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed by Sarita Kotkavalkama. This project creates a pair of socks in size 38/39, featuring a distinctive calf section with decorative stitch work before transitioning to the foot. The design combines colorwork and textured stitching techniques to create visually interesting hosiery suitable for intermediate knitters.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is executed entirely through knitting, using traditional circular or double-pointed needle construction methods. The sock is worked from the cuff downward, beginning with the leg (cuff and calf) and progressing toward the foot. The pattern demonstrates intermediate-level knitting skills, requiring competency with multiple techniques including colorwork, stitch manipulation, and gauge management.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
The calf section features a false cable pattern (valepalmikko in Finnish), which creates a braided or twisted appearance without requiring cable needles. This pattern is worked over five rows and repeated three times, followed by additional rows of the pattern's first row. The false cable is constructed using:
- Knit stitches and purl stitches in alternating sequences
- Slip stitch techniques (nostettu silmukka) for lifting stitches without working them
- Yarn overs (lk puikolle) to create decorative increases
- Stitch passes to create the twisted cable effect
Following the false cable section, the pattern transitions to stockinette stitch (sileä neule), which provides a smooth, classic appearance for the remainder of the sock.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for sport weight yarn, specifically Adlibris Socki brand yarn. The design uses a four-color combination:
- Black (main color for cuff and calf): 60 grams
- White: 70 grams
- Turquoise (A092): 50 grams
- Gray (A047): 25 grams
Total yardage requirements vary by color, with black serving as the primary yarn for the leg section and other colors incorporated for colorwork details.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern requires two needle sizes: 3.5 mm needles for the initial cuff and leg work, and 4.0 mm needles for the main body. The working gauge is 26 stitches and 30 rows per 10 centimeters when measured over stockinette stitch using 4.0 mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished size of 38/39.
Pattern Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have experience with basic knitting techniques and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns. The false cable technique and colorwork transitions require attention to detail and familiarity with stitch manipulation methods.
