Product Description
Do I have enough yarn for this shawl? What weight do I need? I don’t know (IDK) but that’s all right! Just grab some yarn that’s begging to be knit, cast on at the bottom and don’t stop until you’re ready to, or until you are almost out of yarn. Then bind off, block and enjoy.
This shawl is perfect for that special yarn that you want to use every single bit of. Maybe you’ve got some handspun, but you don’t know how much. Or a beautiful gradient. Give it a whirl.
The pattern can be done in any weight yarn - your choice. It doesn’t get more flexible than that!
The shawl is knit from the bottom up in a simple garter stitch pattern with eyelets. Increases are worked at the beginning and end of each right side row. Wrong side rows are for resting. The eyelet pattern is a ten row repeat, but each right side row is the same except for a few center stitches.
IDK (I Don't Know) Triangle Shawl by Laurie Beardsley
What Is Being Made
The IDK Triangle Shawl is a versatile knitted triangular wrap designed with flexibility at its core. This shawl embraces an intuitive, no-stress approach to yarn selection and project completion. Rather than requiring a specific yardage commitment or predetermined finished size, the shawl grows until you decide to stop knitting or until your yarn supply runs low. The finished piece is a triangle shape that can be worn as a traditional shawl, wrap, or decorative accessory.
Design Flexibility and Sizing
One of the defining characteristics of this pattern is its adaptability to various yarn quantities and weights. The shawl can be completed using anywhere from 250 to 800 yards of yarn, making it an excellent project for stash busting or using up leftover yarn from other projects. The finished size varies depending on yarn weight, needle size, and how many rows you choose to knit. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using 768 yards of Louisa Harding Willow Tweed yarn and finished at 65 inches by 31 inches after blocking.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern accommodates a wide range of yarn weights, including lace, fingering, sport, DK, and worsted weight options. The yardage requirement of 250 to 800 yards allows crafters to choose based on their available materials and desired finished size. You will need circular needles in a size appropriate for your selected yarn, a stitch marker to track your place in the pattern, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and blocking supplies to finish your shawl. An interlocking stitch marker or safety pin is optional but can be helpful during construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The IDK Triangle Shawl employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern begins with a cast-on at the bottom of the triangle and increases as you work upward, creating the triangular shape. The exact stitches used are not detailed in the pattern description, but the design is straightforward enough for knitters new to shawl construction. Gauge is noted as not critical to the success of this project, though it will affect the final size and drape of the completed shawl. The sample was worked at a gauge of 15 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches after blocking.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to shawl knitting. The intuitive construction method—simply cast on and knit until satisfied—removes the intimidation factor often associated with shawl patterns. There is no need to worry about precise yardage calculations or complex stitch sequences.
Finishing and Blocking
After completing your knitting, the shawl requires binding off and blocking to achieve its final shape and drape. Blocking is essential for opening up the fabric and allowing the triangular form to fully develop. The sample shown in the pattern measured 65 inches by 31 inches after blocking, demonstrating how this finishing step transforms the knitted piece into a polished, wearable accessory.
