Product Description
When you get this pattern you are getting 3 patterns in one PDF. You are also getting a formula telling you how to make this pattern on all gauges of the loom using the basic hot water bottle measurements. You get a chart for the blue and pink versions of the hot water bottle covers. There is written instructions for the 3/8" gauge and 1/2" gauge looms. You get a basic video tutorial on how to make one with no special stitch patterns. This is a great guide to send your imagination wild with whatever stitch pattern you want. You will need a long universal loom with 2 wedges or you can use the large x loom in any gauge for this project as well. You just need a loom with a 2 peg wedge or even a single peg wedge to decrease. The amount of yarn depends on your gauge you choose to use. I used a dk weight and used probably about 200 yards for the 3/8" gauge. It is slightly more than the amount you would use to make a slouchy hat. You will also need a 7" zipper.
Hot Water Bottle Covers by Scarlett Royale
What Is Being Made
Hot water bottle covers are functional knitted accessories designed to insulate and protect hot water bottles while adding decorative appeal to home décor. These covers are created using loom knitting techniques and can be customized with cable stitch details for added visual interest and texture.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses loom knitting, a fiber arts technique that creates knitted fabric using pegs on a loom rather than traditional needles. Loom knitting is an accessible method for creating structured garments and accessories with consistent gauge and even tension. The technique is particularly suited for flat knit projects like covers that require precise shaping.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
- E-Wrap (EW): The foundational wrapping technique where working yarn is wrapped around the back of the peg, brought to the front, and wrapped back around to the back, creating loops on the pegs
- Flat Knit (K): The primary stitch technique involving tossing the bottom loop over the top of the peg to create knitted fabric
- 4 Stitch Cable Cross: A decorative cable stitch technique available in both right-handed and left-handed variations, adding textural interest and dimension to the cover
- Modified Bind Off (MBO): A finishing technique that securely closes stitches by knitting pegs 1 and 2 together, placing stitch 2 onto peg 1, tossing the bottom loop over the top, and moving the stitch to peg 2, repeating this process across all pegs for a professional edge
- Wedge Decrease (WD): A shaping technique used to reduce stitches by moving the wedge down one notch, transferring the last set of stitches to the wedge pegs on each side, and knitting the two stitches together on the wedge pegs
Materials and Equipment
This project requires DK weight yarn, an appropriate gauge that provides adequate yardage for the finished cover. Essential equipment includes a universal or large X loom with 2 wedges set to the correct gauge, a looming hook for manipulating stitches, a 7-inch zipper for closure, and needle and thread for seaming and attaching the zipper.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crafters with foundational loom knitting experience who are ready to work with cable stitches and structured shaping techniques.
Additional Resources
Video tutorials are provided to support the knitting process, including demonstrations of the basic hot water bottle cover construction and detailed cable cross stitch instructions for both right-handed and left-handed knitters, ensuring accessibility for all crafters.
