Hopetoun Hat by Tracey Lee
What is Being Made
Hopetoun is a knitted hat featuring textured wave lace design, inspired by Hopetoun Falls in Great Otway National Park. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a fitted hat suitable for newborns, children, teens, and adults, with finished circumference options ranging from 32.5cm (12.75 inches) for newborns to 42cm and larger for older sizes. The hat complements the Cape Otway Gauge mitts, making it part of a coordinated accessory collection.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Hopetoun is knit in the round from band to crown using circular needles or small circumference knitting needles, which creates a seamless construction with minimal finishing required. The pattern employs textured wave lace throughout, combining knit and purl stitches to create visual interest and dimension. The hat works equally well with solid-colored and tonal yarns, allowing crafters flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the lace pattern visibility.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner-level crafters:
- Knit (K) – the basic stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch, creating textured contrast in the wave lace design
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – a decrease stitch that reduces stitch count and shapes the hat
- Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK) – an alternative decrease method where stitches are slipped knitwise, returned to the left needle, and knitted together through the back loop
- Yarn Over (Yo) – creates the openwork holes characteristic of lace patterns
- Slip Stitch (S) – executed purlwise with yarn at back for edge definition
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern requires a gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in stocking stitch. Knitters should use 4mm (US size 6) needles or adjust needle size as needed to achieve the specified gauge, ensuring proper fit across all size options. Available finished hat circumferences include newborn (32.5cm/12.75 inches), XXS (37cm/14.5 inches), and XS (42cm), with additional sizes available in the complete pattern.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Hopetoun is designed for DK weight yarn, a versatile yarn weight that creates fabric with excellent stitch definition ideal for displaying lace patterns. The sample garment was knitted using Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury in Coastal Blue colorway, demonstrating how the pattern performs in quality wool yarn. Circular needles or double-pointed needles in 4mm (US6) size are required for knitting small circumference in the round. The pattern's compatibility with both solid and tonal yarns provides options for various aesthetic preferences while maintaining pattern clarity.
Difficulty Level
Hopetoun is rated as a beginner-level knitting pattern, making it accessible to newer knitters while introducing foundational lace techniques. The straightforward construction from band to crown, combined with minimal finishing requirements, allows beginners to build confidence with essential knitting skills including decreases, yarn overs, and in-the-round knitting.
