Product Description
Nowadays, ammonites are just know by their fossils — and the Nautilus has a similar shell. They used to be colorful and happy, roaming the Sea. With this pattern, you can make your own colorful and happy ammonite!
The whole ammonite is worked with sc only, not even chains are used (unless you want to add tentacles). To make this work, I introduce you to my technique of working short rounds, which comes with frequent cutting and starting with a new slip knot.

Heidrun Ammonit Crochet Toy Pattern by Tanja Osswald
What Is Being Made
Heidrun Ammonit is a downloadable crochet pattern for creating a colorful ammonite toy, inspired by the ancient spiral-shelled sea creatures that now exist only as fossils. The pattern allows crafters to make their own soft, three-dimensional ammonite with a customizable size. The designer's finished sample measures 21 cm (8.25 inches) in diameter, though makers can continue crocheting as long as desired to achieve their preferred finished dimensions.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level pattern uses single crochet as its primary stitch technique. The design is based on a Tunisian crochet approach, adapted into a single crochet version by designer Tanja Osswald. The ammonite is constructed in the round, building the characteristic spiral shell shape through continuous crocheting. The toy is then stuffed with polyfill and closed using a darning needle for a finished, three-dimensional form.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet (sc) — the foundational stitch throughout the pattern
- Rounds worked in continuous spiral construction
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Atelier Zitron Echt, a 100% cotton yarn in sport weight. The suggested color palette includes 50 grams each of color 12 (Lavender) and color 16 (Lilac), plus a small amount of color 02 (Light Gray) for accent details. A 3 mm crochet hook (US size C or D) is recommended for working with this yarn weight.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 20 rounds in 10 cm × 10 cm (4 in × 4 in), which is important for achieving the correct finished size and fabric density in this intermediate crochet project.
Additional Materials
- Polyfill stuffing for the three-dimensional toy form
- Darning needle for sewing and closing the ammonite
