Product Description

This is a triangle shawl. It is worked top down and slightly curves around the shoulders. In the photo's you'll see I've made this in two different yarns. The one with each section a different color, I used Queensland United Lambswool and cotton blend, fingering weight yarn. The other I used Queensland Uluru cotton, acrylic, poly blend, fingering weight yarn. I used a larger hook to give the shawl a nice drape. You can use any yarn and weight you prefer.

Hearts Desire Shawl Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Hearts Desire Shawl is a triangle shawl designed by Paige Fitzgerald-Vest and worked from the top down. This advanced-level crochet design features a gentle curve that sits beautifully around the shoulders, making it an elegant layering piece. The finished shawl measures approximately 66 inches in length, providing generous coverage for various styling options.

Construction and Design Structure

This shawl is organized into 7 distinct sections, each showcasing a different texture and stitch pattern. This modular approach allows crocheters to explore varied techniques while building a cohesive, visually interesting garment. The top-down construction method makes it easy to try on as you work and adjust the final length to your preference.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The Hearts Desire Shawl employs multiple crochet techniques across its seven sections to create visual and textural interest. Section 1 features foundational single crochet stitches (sc), which form the base of the design. The pattern incorporates techniques such as working into the front loop only (FLO), creating dimensional effects and interesting stitch definition. The pattern uses chain stitches (ch) and slip stitches (sl st) for joining and shaping. Crocheters are instructed to work semi-loosely to achieve the intended lacy appearance and optimal drape characteristic of this design.

Yarn and Materials

The Hearts Desire Shawl pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, specifically Queensland Collection United, which is composed of 55% lambswool and 45% cotton. This fiber blend offers both warmth and breathability, making it suitable for year-round wear. The pattern requires a total of 10 skeins equalling 2510 yards. The designer recommends using a larger hook (F/5/3.75 mm) than typically paired with fingering weight yarn, which creates the desired lacy aesthetic and improved drape rather than a dense fabric.

Yarn Color Specifications

The Hearts Desire Shawl is designed to be worked in multiple colors, with each section featuring a distinct shade from the Queensland Collection United palette:

  • Section 1: 1 skein in Lead
  • Section 2: 1 skein in Apple
  • Section 3: 1 skein in Kingfisher
  • Section 4: 1 skein in Robin's Egg
  • Section 5: 2 skeins in Rhubarb
  • Section 6: 2 skeins in Wisteria
  • Section 7: 2 skeins in Cocoa

Gauge and Sizing

The designer's gauge is 10 single crochet stitches and 10 rows equal 2 inches. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and ensuring the shawl drapes as intended. The top-down construction allows flexibility in final sizing, as you can continue working until you reach your desired length.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced crocheters who are comfortable with multiple stitch types, color changes, and following complex pattern sequences across multiple sections.
