The Sweater

Sizing and Fit

The sweater is sized to fit babies and children from birth through to 7 years, covering six size options: 0–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–2 years, 2–3 years, 4–5 years, and 6–7 years. Chest measurements range from 41 cm (16 in) to 66 cm (26 in), with actual garment measurements of 45 cm to 71 cm to allow comfortable ease. Full lengths range from 24 cm (9½ in) to 48 cm (19 in), and sleeve lengths are adjustable, ranging from approximately 13 cm to 31 cm.

Techniques and Construction

The sweater is a structured, classically styled knitted garment that incorporates a cable panel as a decorative feature. The cable panel spans 12 stitches and measures 4.5 cm (1¾ in) in width on 4mm needles, adding a tactile, textured element to what would otherwise be a straightforward stocking stitch construction. The use of cables elevates this pattern beyond beginner level, requiring the knitter to work with a cable needle (CN) and execute cable crossings such as C4B (cable 4 back), which involves slipping stitches onto the cable needle, holding them at the back of the work, knitting the next stitches, and then knitting the held stitches to create a twisted rope effect.

The body of the sweater is primarily worked in stocking stitch, which involves knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric. A smaller needle size is typically used for ribbed welts and cuffs to create a neat, elasticated edge, before switching to the larger needle for the main fabric. The sweater features 3 buttons per garment, suggesting a button band or button placket opening, which is a practical detail for dressing young children and babies. Stitch holders are used during construction to hold stitches in reserve — for example, at the neckline — while other sections are completed, a standard technique in garment knitting.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch – the primary body fabric
  • Cable stitch (C4B) – a 4-stitch back cable creating a rope twist effect
  • Rib stitch – likely used for welts, cuffs, and neckband edgings
  • Yarn forward (yfwd) – used to create eyelets or decorative increases
  • Decrease stitches including pass slipped stitch over (psso) and knitting together (tog)

Materials for the Sweater

The sweater requires 3 to 7 balls of Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK (50g balls) depending on the size being knitted, in shade 092 or shade 132. You will need one pair of 4mm (UK8 / USA6) knitting needles for the main fabric, one pair of 3¼mm (UK10 / USA3) knitting needles for the finer edgings, a cable needle, stitch holders, and 3 buttons.
