Product Description

This pretty lacy cardigan was inspired by the traditional Shetland Hap Shawls, with their plain garter centres and brightly coloured feather and fan edging. While shawls are lovely, I don’t wear them nearly as often as I should, so I created a cardigan version. The Hap Cardigan is designed to drape loosely at the front. As the cardigan does not fasten at the front, it is recommended that you choose a size with 0-5cm negative ease at your high bust (round torso at your armpits) rather than your full bust measurement.

Charts are included for either a two or three colour version.

The 3 colour version was worked in Icelandic lace weight, or you can substitute with 340 (400, 480, 550, 650, 730) m / 370 (430, 520, 600, 710, 800) yds of MC 160 (180, 210, 230, 260, 280) m / 180 (200, 230, 250, 280, 300) yds each of CC1 and CC2

When choosing a yarn to substitute, select a heavy lace weight yarn that will retain its shape well after blocking. I would recommend a high wool content.

Hap Cardigan by Emily K Williams

What is Being Made

The Hap Cardigan is an advanced-level knitted cardigan inspired by traditional Shetland Hap Shawls. This open-front cardigan combines the aesthetic appeal of hap shawl design with the practical wearability of a cardigan garment. The design features a plain garter stitch centre body paired with brightly coloured feather and fan lace edging, creating a versatile layering piece suitable for multiple seasons and occasions. The cardigan is designed to drape loosely at the front without fastening, making it an elegant addition to both professional and casual wardrobes.

Design Features and Fit

This cardigan is engineered to be worn with 0–5 cm (0–2 in) of negative ease and is sized according to high bust measurement rather than full bust measurement, accommodating the garment's open-front draping design. The Hap Cardigan is available in three colour versions and comes in six sizes: to fit 80, 90, 104, 116, 130, and 142 cm bust (31.5, 35.5, 41, 45.5, 51, and 56 in respectively).

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Garter stitch – employed for the plain centre sections, creating a textured, reversible fabric
  • Feather and fan lace – the signature decorative edging technique borrowed from traditional Shetland hap shawl construction
  • Colourwork – the bright edging incorporates multiple colours to create visual interest and contrast against the neutral centre

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The cardigan combines fundamental knitting stitches with lace techniques. The garter stitch base provides structural stability and a classic aesthetic, while the feather and fan edging introduces openwork lace patterning characteristic of traditional Shetland textile design. This combination of plain and patterned sections creates visual and textural contrast throughout the garment.

Materials

The pattern specifies Istex Loðband Einband yarn, with each 50-gram skein providing 225 metres (246 yards) of yardage. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 31.5 to 56 grams depending on the finished bust measurement selected. The pattern assumes standard knitting needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight, though specific needle sizes are detailed within the full pattern document.

Pattern Information

This is a downloadable PDF pattern designed by Emily K Williams and technically edited by Steph Boardman. The pattern was published in July 2014 and represents an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with lace techniques, colourwork, and garment construction.
