Last year Dan went through chemotherapy, and during that process he wasn't able to knit. One evening we sat and talked about his favourite knitted item and discussed the outline of what has become this pattern.
We wanted to create something that could be knit for guys as well as girls, and would be the perfect tv or car knitting project.
We hope that people will knit this for friends going through chemo, or gift it to a knitting friend who has been touched by this terrible illness.
The cowl is knit in the round, using just knit and purl stitches so is perfect for beginners and expert knitters alike.
Within the pattern are links to tutorials, along with a special edition Bakery Bears podcast. This is only accessible through this pattern purchase.
Thank you all so much !
Handbrake Cowl by Kay Jones
What is Being Made
Handbrake is a knitted cowl designed as a unisex accessory with particular appeal for male knitters and wearers. This downloadable PDF pattern was created by independent designer Kay Jones as a free offering to the knitting community. The cowl represents a meaningful project, inspired by the designer's personal journey and created with the intention of supporting cancer research causes.
Design Inspiration and Purpose
The Handbrake cowl was conceived during conversations about creating a knitted garment specifically suited for men. The pattern emerged from the designer's desire to knit something new and exciting during a period of personal challenge. The project carries significance beyond its construction—it was developed as a thank you to supporters and as a vehicle for charitable contribution, with proceeds directed toward cancer research initiatives.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This cowl is worked using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for the beginner skill level. The pattern employs classic cowl construction methods that create a versatile neckwear piece suitable for various occasions and style preferences. The straightforward approach makes this an accessible project for knitters new to cowl patterns.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn is used for this project, providing good stitch definition and a fabric with excellent drape and warmth. Worsted weight is a popular choice for cowls as it creates a balanced gauge and works up at a moderate pace.
Tools: Standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required to complete this pattern.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, Handbrake is an excellent introduction to cowl knitting. The accessible difficulty level makes it suitable for knitters developing their fundamental skills while still creating a finished garment with practical wearability.
