Product Description
Shifting columns of slipped stitches break up pooling when worked in variegated or tonal yarn and add visual interest to socks worked in solid yarn. Goodin Socks are worked from the cuff down beginning with a slipped stitch rib cuff and include an eye of partridge heel.
Yarn Requirement: Fingering weight yarn, 260 - 430 yards (238 - 393 m) Yardage required will vary based on Size and foot length. For reference, Size M - 9 inch heel-to-toe sock, fits a Women's U.S. Size 7 (U.K. 5, Euro 37.5) foot and requires approximately 330 yards (302 m). Charts of the Cuff Rib, Leg, and Instep stitch patterns are included and are intended to supplement, not replace, the written instructions.
Goodin Socks by Margaret Kendall
What is Being Made
Goodin Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Margaret Kendall, featuring a classic cuff-down construction. The pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters and creates finished socks in size M, though the pattern accommodates various yarn choices and colorways.
Design Features and Visual Interest
The defining characteristic of Goodin Socks is the use of shifting columns of slipped stitches that run throughout the design. These slipped stitch columns serve a dual purpose: they effectively break up color pooling when worked in variegated or tonal yarns, while simultaneously adding visual texture and interest to socks knitted in solid-colored yarn. This thoughtful design element makes the pattern versatile across different yarn types and color palettes.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Goodin Socks employ several key knitting techniques that define the pattern:
- Slipped stitch rib cuff: The socks begin at the cuff with a slipped stitch ribbed section, which creates an elastic, comfortable edge that holds securely around the leg
- Slipped stitch columns: Decorative columns of slipped stitches are worked throughout the leg and foot sections to create the signature visual pattern
- Eye of partridge heel: The heel is constructed using the eye of partridge technique, a classic sock heel method that creates durability and a neat, textured appearance
- Stockinette stitch instep: The instep is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, comfortable surface against the foot
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply weight yarns, offering flexibility for different fiber choices. The pattern documentation includes three specific yarn examples:
- Fleur de Fiber Acadian: 100% Superwash Merino, 400 yards per 100 grams
- Three Irish Girls Adorn Sock: 80% Superwash Merino with 20% Nylon, 430 yards per 3.5 ounces
- Lion Brand Yarns Sock-Ease: 75% Wool with 25% Nylon, 438 yards per 3.5 ounces
The pattern has been photographed in three colorways: Walkers (Fleur de Fiber Acadian), City by the Lake (Three Irish Girls Adorn Sock), and Snow Cone (Lion Brand Yarns Sock-Ease). The inclusion of nylon content in two of the recommended yarns provides added durability for high-wear sock areas.
Pattern Format
Goodin Socks is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for personal, non-commercial use by knitters of intermediate skill level.
