Glaciers are so beautiful and if you get the chance to go inside one, it really is very blue and sparkly. This stitch forms little sparkly diamonds and the blue yarn adds to the glacier feeling. Great for when you’re out and about, as fingers are free for fiddly tasks. Chunky/bulky yarn adds to that cosy feeling.
The pattern is easy/intermediate - skills needed are cast/bind on and off, knit into the front and back of a stitch, make a st by picking up the loop between sts and knitting into the back of it, and knitting 2 sts together. They are knitted flat on 2 needles and sewn up. Instructions are written line by line, in English with British and USA terms. 5 sizes are available, (all written separately on their own page), so great for family and friends.
Just right for getting out and about when it’s freezing!

The Glacier Blue Fingerless Gloves are a knitted accessory designed by Heather Corcoran of The Lonely Sea. These fingerless mittens are available in five size options to accommodate children and adults: 2-4 years, 5-8 years, 9-12 years, adult, and large adult. The gloves feature an open-finger design that allows for dexterity while providing warmth to the palm and back of the hand, making them practical for activities requiring hand mobility.
Each size is carefully proportioned based on palm circumference measurements, excluding the thumb. The sizing ranges from 14cm (5.5 inches) circumference for the smallest size to 19.5cm (7.75 inches) for the largest adult size. Mitt lengths vary from 15cm (6 inches) for toddlers to 23cm (9 inches) for large adults, with lower rib lengths ranging from 5cm (2 inches) to 9cm (3.5 inches) depending on the selected size.
These fingerless gloves are created using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The construction includes a ribbed cuff section at the lower portion of the mitt, which provides elasticity and helps the gloves stay securely in place on the wrist. The ribbed lower section transitions into the main body of the mitt, creating a fitted garment that hugs the hand comfortably.
The pattern utilizes ribbing as a primary stitch structure, which is a combination of knit and purl stitches worked in alternating columns. Ribbing is essential in this design as it creates vertical stretch and recovery, ensuring the gloves maintain their shape and fit snugly around the hand and wrist. The main body of the mittens is worked in stockinette stitch or similar smooth knit fabric, providing a clean, finished appearance.
The Glacier Blue Fingerless Gloves are designed to be worked in chunky or bulky weight yarn. The pattern specifies King Cole Timeless Chunky in the colorway Duck Egg Blue (color number 2910), which provides 155 meters (170 yards) per 100-gram ball. Actual yardage requirements vary by size:
The pattern notes that most chunky and bulky weight yarns are suitable alternatives to the specified King Cole yarn, provided that knitters verify their tension and gauge matches the pattern requirements. This flexibility allows crafters to choose from a variety of chunky yarn options while maintaining proper fit and drape.
Rated as easy to intermediate, these fingerless gloves are accessible to knitters with some foundational experience. The straightforward construction and use of basic stitches make this project manageable for those progressing beyond beginner patterns, while the multiple sizing options accommodate various skill levels and hand sizes.
