Geoffrey the Giraffe Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry – Deramores Studio DK Acrylic

Geoffrey the Giraffe is a charming beginner-level knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry and published by Deramores. This delightful stuffed giraffe stands 34cm / 13½ inches tall when finished, making it a wonderful handmade gift or decorative piece. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, so you can get started right away without waiting for delivery.

Please note: This finished toy is not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts.

What You Are Making

This pattern produces a three-dimensional stuffed giraffe toy knitted in the round and flat sections, then assembled and filled with toy stuffing. The finished figure is a freestanding, sculptural soft toy with a characterful silhouette — complete with the giraffe's signature long neck, body, and legs. White felt fabric is used for additional detail, and small black buttons bring the eyes to life.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern uses Deramores Studio DK Acrylic yarn in three colourways:

  • Yarn A – Citrine (1 x 100g ball): the warm golden-yellow base colour of the giraffe's body
  • Yarn B – Pearl (1 x 100g ball): a pale, neutral shade used for contrast areas
  • Yarn C – Smoke (1 x 100g ball): a deeper tone used for further detailing and contrast

Deramores Studio DK is a DK weight (double knitting) acrylic yarn, chosen here for its durability, easy care, and wide colour range — all practical qualities for a knitted toy that may be handled frequently. Acrylic yarn is also machine washable in many cases, which is a practical advantage for a children's toy.

Additional Materials Required

  • A pair of 3.5mm (UK 10–9 / US 4) knitting needles
  • Toy filling (less than 125g required)
  • White felt fabric for decorative detail
  • 2 x 6mm / ¼in black buttons for the eyes
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Yarn needle for sewing up and finishing
  • A pair of scissors

Needle Size and Tension

The pattern calls for 3.5mm needles, which is intentionally smaller than the needle size recommended on the Deramores Studio DK ball band. This is a deliberate technique choice: working on a tighter needle produces a firmer, denser fabric that holds its shape well and prevents the toy stuffing from poking through the knitted fabric. This approach is standard practice in toy knitting and results in a more polished, professional finish.

The recommended tension is 22 stitches and 32 rows to 10cm / 4 inches over stocking stitch on 3.5mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is particularly important for toy patterns, as it affects the finished size and the integrity of the fabric.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This is rated as a beginner knitting pattern, making it an excellent project for those who have mastered the basics and are ready to try their first knitted toy. The stitches and techniques used include:

  • Knit (K) – the foundational knit stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Stocking stitch – the primary fabric construction technique, created by alternating knit and purl rows, producing a smooth right side and textured wrong side
  • K2tog (Knit two stitches together) – a simple right-leaning decrease used to shape the body parts of the giraffe
  • Kfb (Knit into the front then back of the same stitch) – an increase technique that adds one stitch, used to shape and sculpt the three-dimensional form of the toy
  • Seaming and finishing
