Product Description

Garden Friends Hoodlet

Not quite a Hood, not really a Bonnet and more than your average Hat, the Garden Friends Hoodlet had a different beginning than any other pattern I have designed. Children’s Book Author, Laurel Heger contacted me asking if I would like to create patterns inspired by the characters in her book, Fox and Rabbit’s Cranberry Surprise. I knew immediately that this was something that I wanted to be a part of! Now you and your kids can dress up just like Fox, Rabbit and Hedgehog while you reenact this beautiful and heartwarming story!

Materials: You will need 1 skein of Bulky #5 yarn for the band around the hat and the tassels, you will also need 1 skein of #4 (worsted weight) yarn of choice that you will hold together WITH 1-2 skeins of Fun Fur (approx 100 yards). Although most Fun Fur is classified as a #5 Bulky yarn, you will find that when paired with a #4 yarn it does not add a lot of bulk to your Hat. You are more than welcome to use whichever brand

What Is Being Made

The Garden Friends Hoodlet is a unique crocheted hat design that bridges the gap between a traditional hood, bonnet, and standard hat. This pattern was created in collaboration with children's book author Laurel Heger and offers sizing inspired by characters from her book Fox and Rabbit's Cranberry Surprise. The hoodlet allows children and adults to dress up as the characters Fox, Rabbit, and Hedgehog while reenacting the story. The pattern includes five different sizes ranging from 3-6 months through adult sizing, making it versatile for the entire family.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This crochet pattern employs fundamental and intermediate techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The construction uses a combination of basic crochet stitches worked in the round to create the fitted head covering. The pattern incorporates post stitches, which add textural dimension and visual interest to the finished piece. Post stitches require working around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops, creating a more three-dimensional fabric structure that enhances the hoodlet's drape and fit.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch): The foundation stitch used to begin the pattern
  • Single Crochet (Sc): A basic short stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric
  • Half Double Crochet (Hdc): A medium-height stitch that provides structure and moderate drape
  • Double Crochet (Dc): A taller stitch that creates a more open, flowing fabric
  • Slip Stitch (Slst): Used to join rounds seamlessly and move yarn across stitches without adding height
  • Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): A textured stitch worked around the front of the post, creating dimensional ribbing
  • Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): A textured stitch worked around the back of the post, adding visual and tactile variation

Materials and Gauge

The Garden Friends Hoodlet is designed to be worked with Bulky weight yarn (#5) and a size K crochet hook. This combination of yarn weight and hook size creates a quick-working fabric that produces results efficiently. The pattern specifies a gauge of 11 single crochet stitches and 16 rows equals 4 inches by 4 inches. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sizing, particularly when creating garments for infants and children where fit is important for comfort and safety.

Size Range

  • 3-6 months: 7 inches length, 17 inches circumference
  • 6-12 months: 7.5 inches length, 18 inches circumference
  • Toddler: 8 inches length, 19 inches circumference
  • Child: 8.5 inches length, 20 inches circumference
  • Adult: 9.5 inches length, 22 inches circumference

Difficulty Level

While the pattern is labeled as beginner-friendly in terms of overall project type, the experience level noted in the pattern itself is intermediate. This reflects the inclusion of post stitches and the shaping required to create a well-fitted hoodlet. Crafters should be comfortable with reading crochet abbreviations, working in the round, and understanding how to execute post stitches before beginning this project.
