Great pattern good for using odd balls of wool.
Product Description
Swirling galaxies come down to earth in the form of this beanie pattern with variations for 3, 5 or 7 colour swirls in each of 3 sizes.
VARIATIONS:
Use 2 strands of fingering instead of 1 strand of DK weight yarn. If using 2 strands, consider holding 1 strand constant and change the second strand to create a marled effect for the contrast colours, or make the constant strand mohair to add a halo to your galaxy.
Photos show Adult Medium/Large size in 7 colour variation modelled on a man with head circumference of 58.5cm/23” and Teen/Adult Small size in the 3 colour variation on a woman with head circumference of 54cm/21”. The pompom on the Adult Medium/Large hat was made using a 6.5cm/2.5” pompom maker.

Knitting Techniques
The Galaxy Swirl Beanie employs colorwork knitting techniques to create its signature swirling galaxy effect. The pattern incorporates stranded colorwork methods, where multiple yarn colours are worked into the fabric simultaneously to produce the intricate swirl patterns. Crafters can choose between working with 3, 5, or 7 different colours depending on their desired complexity and visual effect. The beanie features brim variations, including options for a fold-up brim or a single brim construction, allowing customization of the finished look.
Yarn and Materials
The Galaxy Swirl Beanie is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn or alternatively with 2 strands of fingering weight yarn held together, providing flexibility in yarn selection. The pattern specifies a main colour (MC) and contrast colours (CC) approach. The designer's sample was created using Heathermaid DK Bliss 100% Wool yarn at 200 metres per 100 grams (218 yards per 4 ounces), with the main colour in Silver Grey and contrast colours in a Classic Rainbow colour set. Alternative yarn options mentioned in the pattern include Jelly Bean Fibres yarns.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience in colourwork techniques and basic hat construction. The stranded colourwork method requires familiarity with managing multiple yarn colours while maintaining even tension throughout the project.
