What is Being Made

The Fretta Hat is a quick-knit beanie designed to showcase variegated sock yarn in a wearable accessory rather than hiding it away in shoes. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat measuring 20 inches around when unstretched and 23 inches when stretched, with a height of 8 inches. The design includes a simple slipped stitch pattern that breaks up the colorway of the yarn, and matching fingerless mitts are available as a companion project to further display the beautiful yarn colors.

Techniques Used

The Fretta Hat employs fundamental circular knitting techniques, worked in the round from cast-on to completion. The pattern utilizes a chart-based construction method, with the chart repeated 32 times around the circumference of the hat. The slipped stitch pattern is worked across 4 rounds, and this 4-round sequence is repeated 8 times throughout the body of the hat. Working in the round eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish typical of modern hat design.

Materials

The sample Fretta Hat was knit using Dragonfly Fibers Dragon Sock yarn, a 100% superwash merino fiber available in 390-yard skeins per 4-ounce weight. The sample was worked in the colorway Bad Moon Rising and required 135 yards of yarn, leaving substantial yardage remaining from a full skein for additional projects. The pattern calls for size 3 US (3.25 mm) needles, either a set of 5 double-pointed needles or a 16-inch circular needle, depending on preferred knitting method. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches in blocked stockinette stitch when knit in the round, ensuring proper fit and fabric drape.
