Product Description
The shawl is knitted in two parts and starts from the centre. You start with a provisional cast-on to make the scarf/stole seamless.
Pictures shows the long scarf. Thanks to Ninjacassy fpr the pictures.
A stole or scarf to symbolize snow fall. It starters in clear weather and then the snow starts to fall until you can see the snowflakes and the first icicles begin to form. The stole or scarf is inspired by the germanic fairy tail “Frau Holle” who with her household chores is responsible for the weather and when shaking the bed the feathers fly and become snow on earth. The other inspiration is my friend Juliane who is addicted to lace knitting.

Frau Holle Stole by Atalante
Project Overview
The Frau Holle Stole is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design inspired by the classic fairy tale. This downloadable PDF pattern offers crafters the opportunity to create a beautiful, versatile accessory using traditional knitting techniques. The design is available in multiple sizes to suit different preferences and yarn quantities.
What Is Being Made
The Frau Holle is a knitted stole—a larger, more dramatic version of a scarf that drapes elegantly around the shoulders. The pattern provides options for both a scarf and a stole in two different sizes each. The scarf comes in small (152 inches) and long (200 inches) versions, while the stole is available in small (304 inches) and long (400 inches) dimensions. This flexibility allows knitters to choose the finished length that best suits their needs and available yarn.
Knitting Techniques
The Frau Holle employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished structure. The shawl is knitted in two parts, beginning from the center using a provisional cast-on method. This approach ensures a seamless construction, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a polished, professional finish. The provisional cast-on technique allows knitters to work from the center outward, a common method in shawl design that creates balanced, symmetrical results.
Bead embellishment is incorporated into the design using a small crochet hook to place 9/0 seed beads or an appropriately sized bead for your chosen yarn weight. This technique adds visual interest and texture to the finished piece while maintaining the delicate nature of the knitted fabric.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the available pattern excerpt, the gauge information provides insight into the fabric density. The pattern works to a gauge of 22 stitches by 44 rows in a 4-inch (10cm) square. The designer notes that gauge is not critical to the project, meaning that variations in tension will result in different finished sizes and yardage requirements rather than affecting the overall success of the piece. This makes the pattern more forgiving for knitters with varying experience levels.
Materials and Tools Required
The Frau Holle Stole is designed to be worked on a US4 (3.50mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches (60cm) in length. The yarn specified is Lotta Groeger Garn in 3-ply and 4-ply weights, allowing knitters to choose their preferred yarn thickness within the recommended range.
- Needles: US4 (3.50mm) circular needle, 24 inches (60cm)
- Yarn: Lotta Groeger Garn in 3-ply or 4-ply weight
- Beads: 9/0 seed beads or appropriately sized beads for your yarn
- Additional Tools: Small crochet hook for bead placement, 2 stitch markers, tapestry needle for finishing, and blocking wires or smooth string with pins for blocking
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Frau Holle Stole is suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level. The combination of center-out construction, bead embellishment, and the need for careful blocking makes this project appropriate for those comfortable with shawl knitting and willing to work with slightly more complex techniques.
Finishing and Blocking
Proper finishing is essential to the success of this project. Knitters will need to block the completed stole using blocking wires or smooth string along with pins to shape and even out the fabric. This step ensures that the finished piece drapes beautifully and achieves its intended dimensions.
