Product Description
This is the first pattern for the Dream Big 2014 Collection.
The Frangipani Shawl, inspired by tropical flowers, will bring a ray of sunshine to a cold winter day. This semicircular shawl is knit in two colours of sockweight yarn, in a luxurious alpaca, silk, cashmere blend that will drape beautifully across your shoulders or wrap warmly around your neck like a scarf. The combination of stripes and simple lace patterns make this shawl a fun, relaxing knit.
The pattern is written in a checklist style to help you keep track of the pattern and know how much of the pattern you have completed. It also includes charts for the lace border.
Frangipani trees may seem like a strange inspiration in the middle of northern hemisphere winter but I was holidaying at "home" in tropical Queensland, Australia when inspiration struck and I was delighted by seeing one of my favourite flowers blooming everywhere and filling the air with their beautiful scent.
Frangipani Shawl by Helen Stewart
What is Being Made
The Frangipani Shawl is a semicircular knit shawl inspired by tropical flowers. This advanced-level design creates a versatile garment that can be worn draped across the shoulders or wrapped around the neck as a scarf. The finished shawl measures approximately 114cm (45") in diameter across the straight top edge and 53cm (21") from neck to bottom edge, making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering during cooler months.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This shawl employs a combination of striping and lace patterns to create visual interest while maintaining a relaxing knitting experience despite its advanced difficulty rating. The semicircular shape is achieved through strategic increases and stitch manipulation, allowing the shawl to expand gradually from the neck edge outward. The two-colour construction adds depth and dimension to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The Frangipani Shawl incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches executed with precision:
- Knit stitch (k) – the primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – used to create textural variation and support the lace patterns
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique that creates two stitches from one, essential for the shawl's expanding semicircular shape
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used to shape the garment and create lace details
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease technique where two stitches are slipped as if to knit, then knitted together
- Make 1 purlwise (M1P) – an invisible increase worked on purl rows by picking up the bar between stitches and purling across
Yarn and Materials
The Frangipani Shawl is designed to be knit in sockweight yarn, a lightweight fingering-weight yarn that allows for delicate drape and intricate stitch definition. The pattern calls for Juno Alice Sock yarn, a luxurious blend composed of 70% baby alpaca, 20% silk, and 10% cashmere. Each skein provides 400 metres (440 yards) of yardage, and the pattern requires 2 skeins of 100g in two contrasting colours. This premium fibre blend ensures the finished shawl will drape beautifully across the shoulders while providing warmth and a soft, refined feel against the skin. The combination of alpaca's warmth, silk's lustre, and cashmere's luxury creates an heirloom-quality accessory.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an advanced knitting project, the Frangipani Shawl is best suited for experienced knitters comfortable with shaping techniques, lace pattern reading, and managing two colours throughout the construction. While the designer notes that the combination of stripes and simple lace patterns makes this a fun and relaxing knit, the advanced classification reflects the precision required in executing increases, decreases, and colour changes across the expanding semicircular form.
