Product Description

Hoooked T-shirt yarn is made from recycled off cuts direct from the factory floors and as such varies in colour width and length. You will find many lengths have been joined together with a simple knot. These knots can come apart, if so, then just rejoin the yarn as if you are changing balls or colours.

Using different sized threads and hooks make this a versatile pattern.

Floor Doily Crochet Pattern by Faye Lamb

What is Being Made

The Floor Doily is a large circular rug designed for crochet crafting, created by independent designer Faye Lamb. This project produces an approximately 74cm diameter floor piece worked in the round, making it a substantial home décor item suitable for living spaces. The pattern uses UK crochet terminology and is worked with a slip stitch join method, creating a finished piece that combines decorative openwork with structural integrity.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is an intermediate-level crochet project that employs fundamental round-based construction methods. The Floor Doily is worked in the round using a magic ring foundation, which allows for a seamless center point. The pattern utilizes slip stitch joins between rounds and incorporates turning chains to maintain stitch height throughout the design. Using a stitch marker placed in the first stitch of each round is recommended to easily identify where to slip stitch and join, preventing mistakes in circular construction.

The pattern demonstrates versatility through its use of different sized threads and hooks. This flexibility allows crafters to adjust the finished dimensions and drape of the doily based on yarn weight and hook size selection, making it adaptable to various yarn preferences and desired finished sizes.

Stitches Used

The Floor Doily employs several fundamental crochet stitches to create its structure and decorative elements:

  • Double Crochet (dc) – Forms the primary structural stitches throughout the pattern, appearing in every round and creating the base framework
  • Chain Stitches (ch) – Used for turning chains at the beginning of rounds and to create open spaces and lacy sections within the design
  • Slip Stitch (ss) – Joins rounds seamlessly and connects the final stitch of each round to the turning chain or designated stitch
  • Treble Cluster (trcl) – A special stitch featured in the pattern with two variations: 3trcl (made with 3 trebles) and 5trcl (made with 4 trebles). These clusters create textured, dimensional elements and appear prominently in later rounds to add visual interest and lacy openwork

Pattern Structure and Progression

The Floor Doily pattern consists of five rounds that progressively increase in complexity and diameter. Round 1 establishes the foundation with 8 double crochets in a magic ring. Round 2 introduces chain spaces between stitches, creating the first openwork elements. Round 3 expands these chain spaces to 3 chains, increasing the lacy quality. Round 4 doubles the stitch count to 16 double crochets by adding additional stitches within the chain spaces. Round 5 incorporates the treble clusters and additional chain spaces to create the final decorative openwork that defines the finished piece.

Materials and Notions

The Floor Doily pattern calls for 2 balls of Hoooked Zpagetti yarn, with a minimum yardage of 120 meters (131 yards) total. Hoooked Zpagetti is a t-shirt yarn, a chunky, textured yarn made from recycled cotton jersey fabric, which creates a soft, fabric-like finished piece ideal for floor use. A 12mm crochet hook is specified for working with this yarn weight. The pattern's versatility allows crafters to experiment with different yarn weights and corresponding hook sizes to achieve variations in the final dimensions and appearance of the doily.

Finished Specifications

The completed Floor Doily measures approximately 74 centimeters in diameter, making it a substantial circular floor piece suitable for placement under furniture, in entryways, or as a decorative accent in any room. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that this pattern is appropriate for crafters with foundational crochet knowledge who are comfortable working in the round and reading pattern abbreviations.
