Materials For this hedgehog you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need three colours of yarn, brown (1/4 of a 100 yard skein), camel (1/5) and murky brown (1/6). These quantities are estimates. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes and I needle felted a nose, but a crocheted or round safety nose will do too. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 0053, 1400 and 1420.
Flims the Hedgehog Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
Flims is a small crocheted hedgehog toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This amigurumi-style project creates a finished hedgehog approximately 5 inches (13 cm) tall, making it an ideal small handmade toy or decorative piece suitable for beginners to intermediate crocheters.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible for beginner-level crafters. The hedgehog is constructed using spiral rounds, a continuous circular construction method that builds the toy from the center outward. This technique eliminates the need to join rounds with slip stitches, creating a seamless appearance throughout the piece. The pattern recommends using a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, helping you maintain consistent shaping as you work upward through the spiral.
The design incorporates color changes throughout construction to differentiate the hedgehog's body sections and features. The pattern provides color-coded instructions for more complex color transitions and simplified written directions for straightforward changes. A key technique emphasized is changing color in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears cleanly on your hook as you begin the next section.
Stitches Used
While the PDF excerpt does not detail every specific stitch, the pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight option ideal for creating defined stitches and a sturdy finished toy. The designer specifically recommends fuzzy yarn to enhance the hedgehog's texture and appearance. The example yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn, which provides warmth, durability, and the soft, slightly textured finish that suits a hedgehog's spiky aesthetic. You will need a crochet hook sized appropriately for worsted weight yarn (typically a size H/8 or I/9 hook, though the pattern should specify your exact hook size). A stitch marker is recommended to track your round beginnings as you work in spirals. The finished size depends on your yarn weight choice and crochet tension, so experimenting with different yarn weights and hook sizes allows customization of the final hedgehog dimensions. Reading through the entire pattern before beginning is strongly encouraged, as it helps you understand the color-change system and spiral construction method. Because finished size varies based on yarn weight and individual crochet tension, you may need to adjust eye size and other details to suit your specific yarn choice. The pattern is written in American crochet terminology, so familiarity with those terms will help you follow instructions accurately.Materials: Yarn and Tools
